Philadelphia Pa,  Ridgewood Crew finished off its regularly scheduled spring season with a standout performance at the 2024 Stotesbury Cup, the largest scholastic rowing event in the country. In all, Ridgewood raced 11 boats and took home five medals — two gold and three bronze — tying for second place overall in podium finishes on the Schuylkill River this past weekend.

This year’s Stotesbury Cup, now in its 97th year, featured more than 4,700 competitors from 176 clubs across 10 U.S. states — including entries from Arizona, Florida, and Texas — and one Canadian province. Boats competed on a 1,500-meter course in both time trials on Friday and, if they qualified, a six-boat final race on Saturday.

“This team is peaking at the right time, with scholastic and US rowing nationals coming up,” said Ridgewood Crew Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez. “To earn a medal at Stotes is an incredible achievement. Some of these events featured dozens of entries from some of the top high school rowing teams in the country.”

Ridgewood claimed its first medal of the day on Saturday in the highly competitive Boys Junior Double event, which featured 38 entries during time trials. The sophomore pair of Uhmjoo Han and Matt Moomjy powered their way to bronze in one of the closest finals of the day, with just 1.05 seconds separating first from third place (5:03.660).

Just two events later, the Ridgewood Girls Lightweight Double boat of Anais and Elsa Friedrich reprised their gold-medal winning ways at the Garden State Scholastic Regatta in late April with another victory. The pair of senior twin sisters shook off a runner-up photofinish performance in Friday’s time trials to win the Lawrence Kieffer Trophy by more than three seconds in Saturday’s final (5:42.140).

Junior Will Carroll and sophomore Luciano Saladino found another gear in their Boys Senior Double race on Saturday, improving from fourth place in the time trials on Friday to finish on the podium in the final. Their bronze medal at Stotes served as redemption for the pair’s fourth-place finish on this same course at the City Championships two weeks earlier (5:12.620).

Bronze was the color of the day for the Girls Junior Quad as well on Saturday. The quartet of Samantha Ponomarciuc, Ryan Mincey, Thelma Flowers, and Aiofe Ali — who also just missed a medal on the Schuylkill at the City Championships — finished third in the finals race (5:27.900).

Ridgewood’s most dominant high school boat continues to be the Boys Junior Quad, crewed by freshman Tristan Riedel, sophomores Sam Scharfenberg and Will Nasr, and junior Lucas Evers. This group, which won its time trial, semi-final, and final races at the Garden State Regatta, repeated the victorious hat trick this past weekend at Stotes in an event that included 30 different boats at the outset. In Saturday’s final, Ridgewood ultimately cruised to gold, winning by a margin of more than four seconds (4:37.450).
