RIDGEWOOD — Neither Anthony Criscitiello nor John Sluis ever thought a concussion could prolong his athletic career. Yet the duo ended up in the exact same boat – just not literally.
The recent Ridgewood High School graduates had similar stories to tell at RHS National Letter of Intent Media Day on June 12. Both turned to rowing after injuries detoured their paths from other sports, and that led up to Criscitiello and Sluis signing with the men’s crew programs at College of the Holy Cross and Columbia University, respectively.
“In middle school, I was really into soccer, but I got injured. So, my dad wanted me to do a low-impact sport” in high school, Criscitiello said. “He told me that my choices were crew or cycling, unless I could find something else. And initially, my parents had to force me to go to my first ‘learn-to-row’ [session]. But after those two hours, I loved it.”
