Ridgewood NJ, in May of 2021 Ridgewood Fire Chief Van Goor divulged some interesting information to combat the rash of misinformation circulating in the mainstream and over social media about the per diem EMT issue . The Chief in an EMT FAQ rattled off a litany of Firefighter qualifications , who responds to emergency medical calls  and yes, the modifications have already been tested in February 2021 when no per diem EMT’s  were available .

So far we have heard nothing on the value of the per-diem EMT program , other than it “saves money” . While attacks on the Mayor , Ridgewood Council and Fire Department seem to be running rampant .

Once again the Ridgewood blog would like to remind you , that once the high density housing was agreed to in the central business district the cost of running Ridgewood would spiral upward , with a far larger demand for services ie Fire and Police not less.

  1. But how much does it cost to have firefighters with benefits and a union rather than at-will employees?

    1. How much is the life of a child worth?

How much is the life of a mother worth?

How much is the life of a sister or brother or father worth.

When you can answer those questions I will answer your question.

  2. The change from part time EMTs working during the day to having the Firefighter/EMTs replace them was a change for the better for Village residents. Better response times, better quality of care and better accountability.

Anyone (including you Linda S) who says otherwise is a liar and a fool.

  3. Yeah right, you’ve got guys getting forced to do work they don’t wanna do, that’s quality there. Only a matter of time until the fire union sues (and wins) and we pay out the nose again.

    1. Someone said…….Yeah right, you’ve got guys getting forced to do work they don’t wanna do,

Huh? Do you even know a Ridgewood Firefighter? Forced? It’s part of the requirements for the job. If a firefighter doesn’t want to provide medical care they shouldn’t have applied for the job, period!

      1. Wasn’t in their job description to do someone else’s job when they got hired, still not in contract. Their contract is public.

        1. It doesn’t need to be in the contract. It states right in the Firefighter job application the following:

For some jurisdictions, once appointed, employees may be required to successfully complete an approved Emergency Medical Technician program and maintain certification while employed as a Fire Fighter. Please contact the hiring agency to determine if you will be required to obtain the EMT certification after you are hired.
CPR Certification: Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid CPR Certification issued by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
