Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Mayor Paul Vagianos responded to residents concern over soil contamination at both Habernickel Park and the Schedler property. The Mayor stated as part of the Village’s ongoing efforts to enhance our parks, improvement projects are planned for Habernickel Park and the Schedler property. During preparations for these projects, we discovered that both sites have areas of contaminated soil.
Vagianos admitted, while the tainted soil at Habernickel is confined to a small section, the contamination at Schedler is more widespread, affecting several areas of the property.
Testing and Next Steps
The Village has conducted extensive testing of the soil at both sites and will continue additional testing to ensure we have a complete and accurate understanding of the situation. Once these tests are completed, the results will be posted on the Village website for public access.
Here’s what we know so far:
- The source of the contaminated soil at Habernickel remains unclear.
- At Schedler, however, the tainted soil was brought to the site in 2019 by the previous Village Council as part of the berm construction project, meant to create a barrier between the property and Route 17. While the soil was tested at the time, not all necessary standards were checked.
Remediation Plans
The initial results suggest that both sites can be fully remediated through the removal of the contaminated soil. We are working closely with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to ensure all required testing is conducted and to develop a comprehensive work plan for the cleanup.
Our environmental consultants have assured us that the contaminated soil poses no immediate threat to the public, and there is no need to limit access to these areas in the meantime.
A Commitment to Safety
Although this current Village Council was not responsible for bringing the tainted soil to these properties, we are fully committed to doing everything necessary—according to NJDEP standards and regulations—to remove the contaminated soil from both sites.

It’s an election year and he’s running for re-election. Be very suspect about whatever this man says or does. Just saying.
Do you have a bridge for sale too Paul?
It’s broken and impassable over on Kingsbridge Lane.
Closed for three years and counting because the Village Engineer did an eye-check (no equipment, mind you–no actual tools to determine structural integrity) of the site in 2021 and declared it “unfixable.”
Of course, that proved false. The bond is in place, RFP’s have been requested, and repairs are now pending for the “unfixable” bridge.
These people have turned our leafy green suburb into a Jersey Joke.
Yeah, right. Nothing to see here; move it along.
Did they test all of Habernickle? I am sure there is more contamination where other buildings and pools were removed and areas were leveled for field and park. How do we know exactly where they tested?
Are people still digging in the garden through this contaminated time?
he will be re-elected but kwak will be a thorn in his side
I actually hope it is Kwak who beats out Vagianos, then If Perron is re-elected and Mortimer gets in, he won’t know what to do because the puppet master will be gone. Schedler won’t be done for a very long time, so buckle up people. Getting Vagianos back in isn’t going to help get that field over there anytime soon and the contaminated soil will take a lot of time and a lot of money and resources and the Vag can go back to the diner.
What a bold face LIE, Mayor Vagianos. He claims that everything is “alleged” including his $47 thousand dollar loan to Brooks and Price. I am reading the above lies and deception and once again it isn’t true. “During preparations for these projects, we discovered that both sites have areas of contaminated soil.” You never said, “Oh let’s check just to make sure” in fact just the opposite.
So we all are aware that is total BS and a complete fabrication of what happened. In the case of Schedler, a resident of that neighborhood alerted the NJDEP to the fact that dumping occured while you tried to make those neighbors look like lunatics. You were never going to test the soil. So stop lying and manipulating the facts. If anyone has any questions, then please check the 1200 page document submitted to SHPO where Vagianos says Rutihauser submitted the “clean soil” reports to NJDEP and was perfectly satisfied that the village engineer had it all under contol, except he didn’t. HA! Mortimer, the greenwashing bee boy, said of the SHPO application it was thorough and a great job-I guess that was before SHPO rejected it. Good observations, Frank. Your stellar review will not help this village and you probably don’t have the b*lls to do what is right for the village because you are a puppet of Vagianos.
If you want to vote this lying sack of sh*t out of office, now is the time.
VOTE NO FOR VAGIANOS
please don’t worry your government is here to help….famous last words….
Don’t forget the construction yard behind the water pollution in glenrock .
Hey Mr. manager, you should be ashamed of yourself, because you’re in charge. How come you the mayor the council the health department did not reach out to the employees that worked at those locations that have contaminated soil. You give a shit about their health, obviously not you must be a real piece of shit, the bottom line is the villages responsible for the health and well-being of all the employees that worked at those locations. You can’t hide it , you can’t bury it. You’re putting trust in the wrong people. This started in 2019. This is not your fault unfortunately, you have to deal with it. Well, you can blame the ex-manager Director of engineering, for obviously not doing their job talk about not performing how much worse can you get? They’re probably all backpedaling we wonder whose point is that who. Oh yeah, the swells clean and safe. What’s the village Attorney going to do on this one? This is over his head. I’m sure he’ll come up with some kind of bullshit. Story at the council meeting. What a bunch of fools. A few people definitely should be immediately discharged from their duties. How much more investigation do you need, you have all the proof come on get a set of Balls. Typical local government behavior.
