the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood community is being urged to exercise extreme caution following a surge in local wildlife activity, including multiple aggressive raccoon attacks and a recent bear sighting near several prominent neighborhood schools.
Local authorities and school officials are working together to keep the public informed as wildlife encounters escalate in the Village.
Bear Spotted Near GWMS, Ridge, and Willard Elementary Schools
A recent bear sighting has put families and school staff on edge in the heart of the Village. According to officials, a bear was actively spotted in the vicinity of George Washington Middle School (GWMS), Ridge Elementary School, and Willard Elementary School.
The most recent confirmed sighting occurred on Crest Road. However, the Ridgewood Police Department notes that bears move exceptionally fast and could easily be anywhere within the Village boundaries by now.
Raccoon Attacks Reported in the Village
In addition to the large predator sighting, the Ridgewood Police Department has also confirmed at least two separate raccoon attacks within the Village.
While raccoons are common in North Jersey, unprovoked attacks or highly visible daytime activity often signal abnormal behavior, increasing concerns regarding potential rabies exposure in local wildlife populations.
