Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Police Department, in collaboration with Access Ridgewood and Spec Wired, held a successful “Pull Over Properly” event at the Graydon Pool parking lot yesterday. The event aimed to help neurodiverse drivers understand how to safely respond when pulled over by law enforcement, offering practical simulations to enhance confidence and communication during such encounters.
Police officers ran interactive exercises with participants, allowing them to experience realistic traffic stop scenarios in a safe, controlled environment. Captain Amoruso led the event, sharing insights with both local Ridgewood officers and those from nearby towns who attended to observe and learn about the program.
The event highlighted the importance of helping neurodiverse individuals, who may think or communicate differently, feel more comfortable during interactions with police. Neurodiversity encompasses conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia—all of which affect how people interact with others and navigate their surroundings. By providing this hands-on training, the Ridgewood Police Department took an important step towards fostering better understanding and safety for all drivers.
This program stands as a model for other communities, showing how tailored training and awareness can bridge the gap between law enforcement and neurodiverse citizens.
