Dr. David A. Robinson is a professor in the Department of Geography at Rutgers University and also serves as New Jersey’s State Climatologist. His research interests are in applied climate, especially related to New Jersey, and in climate dynamics and change, particularly focused on global snow cover. He is a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and sits on climate advisory committees for the National Academy of Sciences and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  He has chaired two National Research Council panels and the American Meteorological Society’s Polar Meteorology and Oceanography Committee, and is a past president of the American Association of State Climatologists. Dr. Robinson was recently elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and has received a NOAA Environmental Hero award, as well as the Lifetime Achievement award of the Association of American Geographer’s Climate Specialty Group.

  1. Albedo, yes, but where have you gone, Mr. Robinson? Start studying clouds rather than snow cover and maybe you’ll put your credentials to better use. The sun and it’s natural variation in magnetic field indirectly but very strongly affects average albedo due to low altitude cloud cover. A less active sun retracts its protective magnetic field “cover” from earth and thereby allows more interstellar gamma rays to pierce our atmosphere. The greater number of penetrating gamma rays then strike more aerosols in the atmosphere, precipitate more water droplets, and thus cause a greater percentage of the earth’s surface, on average and over time, to be obscured by cloud cover. So cast your eyes heavenward, Mr. Robinson, and bone up on recent scientific research. Snow cover is an effect, not a cause, of natural climate variation. The real driver is the sun. And its indisputable, is it not? that human activity cannot be blamed for changes in the sun. We are heading into another sunspot Grand Minimum that will last for at least 30-40 years. Fur coats will be back in fashion, and Ridgewood will have plenty of water (albeit in the form of snow).

  2. Water supply does not seem to be decreasing due to any climate change, but rather due to poor planning and management of existing infrastructure.

    From the State of NJ DEP at https://www.nj.gov/dep/dsr/trends/pdfs/climate-change.pdf:

    “Total annual precipitation data are also available from the State Climatologist (see
    Figure 4). Analysis of the data shows a statistically significant increasing trend (Kendall
    Tau = 0.16; p<0.05) since 1895 in total annual precipitation and the departure from
    normal with pronounced year-to-year variation. To date, 2011 was the wettest year
    on record. In August of 2011, Tropical Storm Irene dropped more than 17” of
    precipitation over the State.

    Although increased precipitation is projected for New Jersey’s future climate, there is
    considerable uncertainty with respect to the magnitude of change from the baseline
    as well as the seasonality of the change, which remain active areas of research."

  3. Perhaps it would be beneficial to also have a management expert and a planning expert present. The management presentation could include things like;
    how to mislead your customers so that your product is believed to be in short supply. How to purchase an new building while allowing the infrastructure that delivers your product to be wholly inadequate. And how to overcharge some customers without getting caught (need this one)

    The planning session could be all about not being able to provide your product while pointing blame at everything else including some half baked climate theories. Should include a session on how not to upgrade storage, capacity, or delivery while agreeing to increased demand.

    These would be interesting.
