Ridgewood NJ, It is a very sad day for Ridgewood.  The iconic sycamore tree located on the island within Graydon Pool is dying and will be removed by workers from the Village’s Shade Tree Division sometime during November. Ridgewood Deputy Mayor Michael Sedon made this sad news public during the Village Council meeting held on Wednesday, 10/11. The existing tree is being removed to ensure the safety of Graydon’s many visitors. According to Mr. Sedon, the Village anticipates planting a new tree in the same location within the next 6-9 months

  1. To put a new large tree in there is a $20k plus project. Why not just put a nice concrete pool over on that side. leave the rest of graydon but add a concrete pool over on that side which is not open to swimming anyway. Without the tree the island is pointless so build another option for the people who hate Graydon.

To be clear–I love Graydon. I buy 7+ passes a year. But many of my neighbors wont take their kids or avoid it like the plague. We need to find a way to serve more residents.

  2. They can cut off the DEAD portions. Trees can take many years to die when you first see it’s dying. There is always a rush to destroy something beautiful in nature. ;It they really cared they would watch and if other parts of tree also keep steadily dying then take it down.

  3. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  4. I bet the expert who diagnosed the tree is from Downes Tree Service. They can easily cut any tree that has a dry leaf. I learned the hard way when I hired them to trim my backyard tress and they went bananas. They called a 15 yr Mulberry tree a WEED. I am still kicking myself for paying someone to kill my tree. Not to mention a “dying” pine. Duh.

  5. Cut it and eat it…tastes like chicken

  6. How about removing the grass and weeds on that island and planting some nice yearly flowers shrubs and repairing all the fieldstone walls around the pool so when I go swimming and walking I don’t bang my toes in to the broken pieces of a wall thanks

  7. The tree looks fine to me. Has an EXPERT been consulted?

  8. Just prune it clean it up

  9. That whole pool needs a lot of work

  10. I like 816’s idea.
I suppose the whole objective is to get more people interested and if a smaller ” blue pool” on that side works why not?
Sure sounds like it would work 2 me….

  11. That place has became a money pit, that place needs a lot of work I walk around there every morning.

  12. Pretty sure there is a horse buried on that island.

  13. There is no way that this tree is dying. I have three sycamores on my property and on that of my neighbors located not far from Graydon and each look the same as the one at Graydon. FWIW, the Almstead folks determined recently that each was healthy and thriving. When the limbs start dying and in danger of dropping, then then time arrives to seek an opinion on its viability; not before
