PARAMUS, NJ — A late-night drive turned into a harrowing rescue operation early Sunday morning after a high-performance vehicle careened off Route 17, leaving a young driver trapped inside the wreckage.
According to Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti, the accident occurred just after midnight on Sunday, April 19. A 20-year-old River Vale man was traveling northbound in a 2021 BMW M3 when he reportedly lost control in the center lane. The vehicle veered sharply to the right, striking both a tree and a utility pole near Paramus Chevrolet.
The Rescue Operation
Paramus police arrived on the scene at approximately 12:10 a.m. to find a chaotic sight. The driver was trapped within the mangled BMW and was drifting in and out of consciousness.
Officers acted quickly to begin extrication efforts. Thanks to the rapid response of the Paramus Police, the driver was successfully freed from the vehicle. He was treated on-site by Paramus EMS and Valley Hospital paramedics before being transported to Hackensack University Medical Center. While the crash was severe, authorities indicate his injuries currently appear to be non-life-threatening.
Route 17 Shutdown & Investigation
The aftermath of the collision forced a temporary shutdown of Route 17 Northbound. Traffic was diverted at Century Road for several hours as emergency crews cleared the debris and investigators surveyed the scene.
The crash is currently under a multi-agency investigation. Joining the Paramus Police Crash Investigation Unit are:
-
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Unit
-
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department (Traffic Control and Bureau of Criminal Identification)
Forensics detectives were on-site to collect evidence and determine the exact cause of the loss of control.
Stay Safe on North Jersey Highways
Route 17 is known for its heavy traffic and demanding curves. Authorities remind drivers—especially those operating high-horsepower vehicles like the BMW M series—to remain vigilant, observe speed limits, and stay alert during late-night hours when visibility is reduced.
