New Brunswick NJ, Rutgers University has introduced new guidelines for student protests on campus, significantly altering how and where demonstrations can occur. Under the new rules, encampments are now banned, and protesting is limited to specific hours and locations.

Protests will only be allowed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and each campus will have designated areas for demonstrations. On the College Avenue campus in New Brunswick, for example, protests will now be restricted to Records Field, a green space across from the Student Center. This location is notably more isolated than Vorhees Mall, where protests were held last semester.

The policy change comes after an encampment of tents emerged at Vorhees Mall during protests over the Israel-Hamas war, a situation mirrored at universities across the nation. The encampment lasted four days, prompting the university to reassess its approach to campus demonstrations.

“These guidelines are intended to provide for the safety of participants to engage in freedom of expression while avoiding the disruption of educational, clinical research, or business functions at the university,” said Rutgers University CEO Antonio Calcado.

To support students in understanding these new rules, Rutgers has launched a dedicated website titled “Free Expression at Rutgers.” The site provides information on the permitting process required for protests, noise standards, conduct expectations, and regulations for hosting tables and posting flyers.

Rutgers isn’t alone in implementing stricter protest guidelines. UCLA has also banned encampments, and Columbia University now requires anyone entering the campus to have an ID and pass through security.

These new measures reflect a broader trend among universities to balance free expression with campus safety and order as the new academic year begins.

  3. I’m all for free speech you have the right as long as you’re not interfering with anyone’s education, and destroying property. If you do so you should be charged and expelled immediately you have no right to destroy anyone’s property coming to that on my property. I’ll break your hands.

  4. Rutgers Students say,

Give teachers a raise! Give teachers a raise! Give teachers a raise!

Why did you raise tuition?! Why did you raise tuition?! Why did you raise tuition?!

  5. i think they are still requiring freshman to have the Covid vaccine.
Just incredible if true. How could anyone send their kid to a school that had such a mandate?

    1. Mandating the monkey pox vaccine would be more appropriate.
