New Brunswick NJ, the House Education Committee declared on Wednesday that it has dispatched a letter to Rutgers University, seeking information concerning its handling of antisemitism on campus, marking it as the fifth college under scrutiny by the panel for this issue.
Chair Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) articulated concerns over Rutgers’ response to antisemitism, mirroring similar inquiries sent to Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Columbia University.
The letter outlines instances of antisemitism allegedly overlooked by the university and demands details dating back to 2021 on antisemitic incidents, disciplinary measures taken, and communications among university officials.
“Rutgers stands out for the intensity and pervasiveness of antisemitism on its campuses. Rutgers senior administrators, faculty, staff, academic departments and centers, and student organizations have contributed to the development of a pervasive climate of antisemitism,” the letter asserts.
Republican lawmakers initiated investigations following a December hearing where the presidents of Harvard, Penn, and MIT hesitated in response to inquiries regarding the treatment of calls for the genocide of Jewish people as harassment on campus.
The investigation initially focused on these three institutions, with Harvard’s inquiry recently escalating to a subpoena from Foxx. Columbia University officials are scheduled to testify at an antisemitism hearing before the committee in April.
