Ridgewood NJ, North Jersey native David Madden of Ridgewood emerged as the victor on Tuesday’s episode of the beloved game show “Jeopardy!” as he advanced to the semifinals of the TV program’s invitational tournament.
With nearly two decades of experience competing on “Jeopardy!,” Madden is a seasoned contestant, having previously showcased his knowledge on the iconic game. His impressive track record includes a 19-game winning streak as a super champion spanning seasons 21 and 22, as well as participation in the Tournament of Champions semifinals in 2006. Additionally, Madden emerged victorious in the 2019 all-star games as a member of “Team Brad,” accumulating total regular-season winnings amounting to $430,400.
David Madden is the founder and Executive Director of the National History Bee and Bowl. He began his quiz bowl career playing for Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, NJ from 1995-1999, where he led the team to a fifth place finish at the 1999 PACE NSC and a second place finish at the 1999 NAC. For the 2011-2012 season he returned to coach and revive Ridgewood’s quiz bowl team.
During Tuesday’s matchup, Madden demonstrated his prowess by securing a final tally of $18,401. His performance was particularly notable in both the “Jeopardy!” and double “Jeopardy!” rounds, where he answered a total of 20 questions correctly, with only two incorrect responses.
Despite a strong showing by Arthur Chu, a writer from Cleveland, who answered 19 out of 21 questions correctly, Madden ultimately secured victory by correctly responding to the Final Jeopardy clue, “In his “Natural History,” Pliny described it as “argentum vivum”,” with the answer “What is Mercury?”
The invitational tournament’s quarterfinals will continue until Monday, with semifinal dates to be announced in the future.
