Atlantic City NJ, Congressman Van Drew demanded that all offshore wind activity in the state of New Jersey end, following an unprecedented number of whales have washed ashore in the New Jersey/New York area over the past month.

Most of New Jersey’s “environmental groups” caved to big money interests and Governor Murphy including sadly the Sierra Club except for Whale Stranding-Save LBI saying: “In the past two months, there have been seven whales, all endangered species, washed-up in the New Jersey and New York coastal region. A broad coalition of environmental organizations agree it’s important to discover why we’re seeing increased whale mortalities in New Jersey and surrounding areas; however, they believe that correlating it to wind turbine site exploration is unfounded and premature. The coalition encourages more research into the potential impacts of these turbines and their construction on wildlife but don’t believe plans for future production should be halted unless a direct correlation is uncovered and proven.”

We all know if there were oil rigs off the coast these very same so called “environmental groups” would be screaming.

“Since offshore wind projects were being proposed by Governor Murphy to be built off the coast of New Jersey, I have been adamantly opposed to any activity moving forward until research disclosed the impacts these projects would have on our environment and the impacts on the fishing industry,” said Congressman Van Drew. “Ocean life is being put at risk as our Governor and President force through their Green New Deal policies, without giving full consideration to their real-world impacts. We have seen a complete lack of transparency from New Jersey’s leaders, as well as D.C. politicians who are ramming through these projects in order to push their climate agenda.”

“Once committees for the 118th Congress are finalized, I will be calling for congressional investigations into the matter. I demand that all offshore wind activity be halted until it is properly determined what the effects of these activities are having on our marine life.”

After six dead whales washed up on area beaches, Senator Vince Polistina (R-Atlantic) urged Governor Phil Murphy to order a suspension of all offshore wind development activities so that a full and proper investigation can be conducted to determine any connection between the deaths and ongoing work.

“We should suspend all work related to offshore wind development until we can determine the cause of death of these whales, some of which are endangered,” Polistina stated. “The work related to offshore wind projects is the primary difference in our waters, and it’s hard to believe that the death of six whales on our beaches is just a coincidence.”

Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger and Assemblywoman Victoria Flynn (R’s – Monmouth) are calling for an immediate halt to offshore wind development projects pending an investigation into whether they are causing damage to marine wildlife in light of the sudden whale deaths along the Jersey Shore.

The 13th District Legislators are joined with State Senator Vincent Polistina (R – Atlantic) and Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R -CD2) in calling for this action:

“We join with our fellow legislators at the State and Federal levels in calling for an immediate, emergency moratorium on all offshore wind turbine developments until we can have scientific assurances that these projects are not harming vital fisheries and our marine ecosystems along New Jersey’s coastline.

Our concerns have grown exponentially with each report citing another whale washing ashore. The sensitivity of sea life to electromagnetic fields as well as disturbances in migration routes is astounding. Until we know for a certainty that these new wind turbines are not harming marine animals – we must halt any and all projects to ensure against further harm.

A delay in doing so could have drastic consequences to wildlife both on and off the shore as well as to our historic commercial and recreational fishing industries which rely heavily on a healthy oceanic ecosystem.”

  2. They never complain about the LARGE number of birds killed each year by the wind turbines.
Researchers estimate that 140,000 to 328,000 birds are killed every year in collisions with the turbines’ spinning rotor blades and support towers. The risk to birds is highest at night, when the blades and towers are cloaked in darkness.
