Serious Crash Shuts Down Parkway, Leaves One in Critical Condition

Montvale NJ, A school bus from Lakewood, carrying 31 passengers, overturned on the Garden State Parkway in Montvale on Monday night, injuring 13 people, including one critically. The accident, which happened around 7:40 p.m. near mile marker 170.9, temporarily shut down all northbound lanes, causing major traffic disruptions.

Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali shared updates on social media, confirming that no fatalities were reported but that 13 individuals had been transported to local hospitals for treatment.

First Responders Rush to the Scene

Video footage from the scene showed the large yellow school bus lying on its side, facing the opposite direction of traffic, near Exit 171 by the James Gandolfini Service Area. Emergency responders, including Rockland Hatzoloh and local fire and rescue teams, worked swiftly to pull passengers from the wreckage and provide medical assistance.

Who Was on Board?

According to The Monsey Scoop, the bus was transporting 29 young men and two adults who were celebrating the birth of a rabbi’s grandchild.

One of the young men was initially feared dead but later regained a pulse after emergency responders acted quickly. He was transported to Valley Hospital in “extremely critical condition”.

Statements from Officials

Montvale’s Mayor Mike Ghassali expressed gratitude for the emergency responders’ quick actions, stating:

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all first responders and the neighboring towns’ first responders for their swift assistance. Special thanks to Rockland Hatzoloh Ambulance Service for arriving on the scene to help. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families during this difficult time.”

Governor Phil Murphy also addressed the incident, confirming that an investigation is underway.

“I’ve been briefed on a crash on the Garden State Parkway earlier tonight near the James Gandolfini Service Area involving an overturned school bus from Lakewood,” Murphy posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Department of Transportation are leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Road Closures & Traffic Impact

The crash initially closed all northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway. By 9:45 p.m., one lane had reopened, easing traffic congestion in the area.

Ongoing Investigation

As of now, authorities have not released an official cause for the crash. The New Jersey State Police are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.

We all wonder if we had the proper credentials for the license, the police department should be out cracking down on these individuals driving down 17 other highways at extremely high rate of speed, years ago they used to drive their station wagons doing 90 now they’re driving in their mini vans. And the best is when you see the school bus it’s over loaded and they’re all standing.
