5 Housing Markets Where Renting Beats Owning
By AnnaMaria Andriotis

In theory, plummeting home prices and record-low interest rates should make buying a home cheaper than renting one. But experts say in some parts of the country, it still pays to be a tenant.

Despite the incentives to buy now — namely that average rates on a 30-year mortgages are now 3.7% — sales of single-family existing homes slipped 1.5% in May from a month earlier, according to data released today by the National Association of Realtors. Experts say the drop, which came during the historically busy spring season, suggests the housing market has a way to go to recover. If anything, the ranks of American homeowners are dwindling. The homeownership rate in the U.S. fell slightly from 66% to 65% during the first quarter of 2012 — the lowest in 15 years, according to the latest data by the U.S. Census. (It peaked at just over 69% in 2004.)

Renters, meanwhile, have more inventory to choose from as owners who are unable to sell their homes often have no choice but to find tenants, says Dan McCue, research manager at Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. The number of single-family homes for rent or being rented grew by two million units from 2006 to 2010, according to a JCHS report released this month, and McCue says the number has likely grown since then. “One third of all rentals are single-family homes,” he says.

Housing market recovery depends on job growth, report says

THE RECORD

The housing market is beginning to recover, but could stall if the U.S. doesn’t have sustained job growth, the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University said Thursday.

And despite more affordable home prices, millions of households in the U.S. – mostly renters – struggle with monthly housing costs, the center said in its annual State of the Nation’s Housing report.

“Almost one-fifth of households report spending more than half of their income on housing,” said Eric Belsky, managing director of the center. “That’s not only a housing crisis; it means there’s that much less to spend on everything else.”

“The housing sector is turning a corner, but we need to think about what to do to serve everybody,” said George McCarthy, an executive with the Ford Foundation, one of the report’s sponsors, at a press conference in New York.

Rental construction is the liveliest sector of the real estate market, pushed up by demand from people who have lost their homes or held off on buying. The number of renters jumped 5.1 million in the 2000s, the largest decade-long increase since World War II, the report said.

Oy Vey…’Obama … Stressed He Probably Knows About Judaism More than Any Other President’
“[A]ll his friends in Chicago were Jewish.”
12:36 PM, May 30, 2012 • By DANIEL HALPER

President Obama met yesterday with “about 20 Conservative Jewish community leaders, thanking them for the work they do to improve communities around the country and discussed their shared commitment to rebuilding the U.S. economy,” Haaretz reports.
Obama in Cairo

In the meeting, Obama reportedly boasted about his knowledge of Judaism, telling the leaders that he thinks he knows more “about Judaism” than all past presidents. He said he gained this knowledge of Judaism from reading.

“Obama … stressed he probably knows about Judaism more than any other president, because he read about it,” Haaretz reports. “[He] wondered how come no one asks Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner or Senate minority leader Mitch McConnel [sic] about their support to Israel.”

Similarly, he said to the group, “I [am] not going to tell you again how I even feel about Israel, but why [are] we still talking about it?”

Race for Bergen GOP chief getting hotter than ever

Race for BCRO chief getting hotter than ever

To most Bergen Republican insiders, Cresskill’s John McCann is general counsel — and political watchdog — for Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino.

But now that McCann has entered the June 14 race for Bergen County Republican Organization chairman, one of his opponents, Anthony Rottino, suspects he is playing a more devious role — stalking horse for the embattled incumbent, Bob Yudin.  (Stile, The Record)

Village Council Elections: isn’t finally time to hoist up “liberal enclave” banner

OK, Can we now stop the pretense that Ridgewood is a “right leaning” town?

In the 2008 Democrat primary:
– Ridgewood was one of only 4 towns in Bergen county to vote for Obama over Clinton

In the 2008 Presidential election:
– Ridgewood went for Obama over McCain with a 22% margin
(Bergen county went for Obama over McCain with an 17% margin)

And now:
– Ridgewood elects a self-serving career Democrat politician by a wide margin (in Aronsohn) who was openly backed by the Democrat party (financially and logistically).

I think it is time to take down the “right leaning town” banner under the Ridgewood name and hoist up the “lliberal enclave” banner and welcome the Democrat Party machine and their cronies into town.

>Report: Democrat-controlled Senate laziest in 20 years

>Report: Democrat-controlled Senate laziest in 20 years

For those who need proof that the Senate was a do-nothing chamber in 2011 beyond the constant partisan bickering and failure to pass a federal budget, there is now hard evidence that it was among the laziest in 20 years.

In her latest report, Secretary of the Senate Nancy Erickson revealed a slew of data that put the first session of the 112th Senate at the bottom of Senates since 1992 in legislative productivity, an especially damning finding considering that it wasn’t an election year when congressional action is usually lower.

For example, while the Democratically-controlled Senate was in session for 170 days, it spent an average of just 6.5 hours in session on those days, the second lowest since 1992. Only 2008 logged a lower average of 5.4 hours a day, and that’s when action was put off because several senators were running for president, among them Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain.

American Express pulls gift cards from New Jersey
American Express has become the first company to pull its gift cards from New Jersey pharmacies, groceries and convenience stores rather than attempt to comply with a new wrinkle in the state’s unclaimed property law.
AmEx spokeswoman Vanessa McCutchen told The Associated Press that the company began pulling gift cards sold through third-party retailers last week. As of Monday, the only way for New Jersey residents to buy AmEx gift cards, which can be used practically anywhere, is directly from the company.  (Delli Santi, Associated Press)

>Obama Fares Worse Among Women after Month-Long Contraception Mandate Battle

>Obama Fares Worse Among Women after Month-Long Contraception Mandate Battle
Washington Post poll contradicts Washington Post narrative about female voters.
2:37 PM, MAR 12, 2012 • BY JOHN MCCORMACK

How’s the great contraception mandate battle of 2012 playing out? If you read the Washington Post’s news coverage, the issue is supposedly killing Republicans among female voters. But the newest Washington Post/ABC poll tells a different story.

During the first few days of February, about a week before Obama declared a so-called “accommodation” to the contraception/abortifacient mandate, a Washington Post/ABC poll showed Obama’s approval rating at 50 percent, with 46 percent of Americans disapproving.

Then, from March 7 to 10–a week into the national media firestorm surrounding Rush Limbaugh’s degrading remarks about Georgetown Law student and liberal activist Sandra Fluke–Washington Post/ABC conducted another poll. It found Obama’s approval rating at 46 percent, down four points from February, and his disapproval rating at 50 percent, up four points from February.

Media Matters memo called for hiring private investigators ‘to look into the personal lives’ of Fox employees
By Tucker Carlson Updated: 10:58 PM 02/13/2012

A little after 1 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2009, Karl Frisch emailed a memo to his bosses, Media Matters for America founder David Brock and president Eric Burns. In the first few lines, Frisch explained why Media Matters should launch a “Fox Fund” whose mission would be to attack the Fox News Channel.

“Simply put,” Frisch wrote, “the progressive movement is in need of an enemy. George W. Bush is gone. We really don’t have John McCain to kick around any more. Filling the lack of leadership on the right, Fox News has emerged as the central enemy and antagonist of the Obama administration, our Congressional majorities and the progressive movement as a whole.”

“We must take Fox News head-on in a well funded, presidential-style campaign to discredit and embarrass the network, making it illegitimate in the eyes of news consumers.”

What Frisch proceeded to suggest, however, went well beyond what legitimate presidential campaigns attempt. “We should hire private investigators to look into the personal lives of Fox News anchors, hosts, reporters, prominent contributors, senior network and corporate staff,” he wrote.

>Former Democratic congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper,: I Wouldn’t Have Voted for Obamacare If I’d Known About HHS Rule
12:46 PM, FEB 7, 2012 BY JOHN MCCORMACK

Former Democratic congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper, a Catholic from Erie, Pennsylvania, cast a crucial vote in favor of Obamacare in 2010. She lost her seat that November in part because of her controversial support of Obamacare. But Dahlkemper said recently that she would have never voted for the health care bill had she known that the Department of Health and Human Services would require all private insurers, including Catholic charities and hospitals, to provide free coverage of contraception, sterilization procedures, and the “week-after” pill “ella” that can induce early abortions.

Jersey Shore evacuation plan advances

New Jersey is improving its plans to quickly evacuate large sections of the Shore in the event of a storm or other emergency.

The Legislature approved the recommendations Monday of a task force that studied the state’s ability to move large numbers of people away from the coast.

The plan includes lane reversals on major highways leading away from the Shore; using schools as emergency shelters; and setting up a registry of residents who would need special help in leaving the area.  (Parry, Associated Press)
