Free Dog Rabies Clinic and 2013 Dog License Information – May 15
The Ridgewood Health Department would like to remind residents of the annual FREE dog rabies clinic on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 6pm until 7 pm at the Recycling Center on Glen Avenue. All dogs must be accompanied by an adult and leashed or contained in a carrying case.
Supervisor of Health Dawn Cetrulo would like to remind Village of Ridgewood residents that 2013 dog license renewals are due during the month of June. A $20 late fee will be charged for all renewals received after June 30, 2013.
The health department will be sending renewals via email. If you do not have an email address please call our office and request a renewal to be mailed to you. Renewal applications may also be obtained by visiting our website at www.ridgewoodnj.net or coming in person to the Ridgewood Health Department, 131 North Maple Ave. The office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. Please call 201 670-5500 ext 503 with questions.
New Jersey law requires owners of all dogs seven months of age or older to be registered with the town they live in. In order for the license to be issued, the owner must present proof that a licensed veterinarian has vaccinated the dog against rabies and that the duration of immunity from that vaccination does not expire before May 1, 2014. To receive the discount for a spayed or neutered pet, proof must also be provided.
Remember the Economy? It’s Still Bad

According to a poll earlier this year, voters have a higher opinion of cockroaches than Congressmen. President Obama’s personal popularity remains solid, but his job approval rating is going down. Why are our elected officials unpopular?
It might just be because they are not listening. In poll after poll, the American people continue to tell Washington that their top priority is the economy. A recent Fox News poll asked participants what is the most important issue facing the nation. The results: the economy got 42 percent, deficit 17 percent, guns 5 percent, and immigration 4 percent.
President Obama inherited a weak economy, to be sure, but his policies, including Obamacare with its costly expected mandates on businesses and the Dodd-Frank financial services regulations have made the situation worse. Even when we see some economic growth, the jobs growth has been feeble. People have been leaving the workforce. Heritage’s James Sherk noted recently, “Labor force participation dropped to 63.3 percent, the lowest rate since 1979..” America needs to get its people back to productive work, not recruit Americans to start taking food stamps.
Instead of working on bills that would help the economy, right now the politicians are working on an Internet sales tax bill and a comprehensive immigration bill offering amnesty.
The liberals’ push on each of these issues will be destructive to our liberties. The Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action have been fighting liberal policy each step of the way.
Heritage continues to fight on immigration, pointing out major flaws in the Gang of Eight’s plan and calculating how much an amnesty would cost American taxpayers.
Heritage has also criticized the move for a new Internet sales tax to help states raise more funds to grow government. The Senate is considering forcing businesses to collect taxes for states where they have no physical presence—an affront to representative government and the camel’s nose under the proverbial tent of Internet regulation.
Liberals effectively control the agenda in Washington. Harry Reid (D-NV) has the gavel in the Senate, and President Obama has the bully pulpit. Washington is focused on what they want to talk about and what they are pushing. A compliant press corps certainly amplifies their message.
But conservatives in the House of Representatives are not helpless. They should try to set the agenda on the economy. Last session, they passed some 40 bills that they said would be good for the economy, all of which died in the Senate. But in this Congress, they seem to have given up.
In some ways, who can blame them since liberals reject their ideas out of hand? It would be far better for America, though, if they would set forth their own agenda and make clear that distractions like comprehensive immigration reform with amnesty, and the Internet sales tax are going nowhere in the House.
Instead, House leadership is almost inviting the divisive and distracting issues by saying nothing, or worse, saying the House will take up similar legislation (in the case of immigration reform).
Washington could do a number of things to improve the economy. Here are three especially relevant now: (1) reverse the New Year’s tax hikes that are already hurting economic growth, (2) take steps, even modest ones supported by both parties, to reduce the unfunded long-term obligations of entitlement programs and get us on a path to balance the budget in 10 years (because adding debt slows the economy), and (3) repeal, or at least delay, Obamacare, whose crushing mandates and costs are destroying jobs and trampling on the religious liberty of employers from Hobby Lobby to social service ministries to homeless shelters.
If those sound too partisan, why not take an easy first step and approve the Keystone XL pipeline? It would create thousands of well-paid jobs. The President could act, but if he does not, then Congress should approve the pipeline and force the President to veto it. During the Senate budget debate, an amendment from Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) supporting Keystone passed 62-37.
We know that America’s economy won’t be helped when liberals are waging ideological battles. Conservatives in states like Wisconsin, Texas, and South Carolina are showing they have real solutions that benefit all their citizens. They are fighting for limited government, lower taxes, balanced budgets, and more economic freedom.
Conservatives in Washington should take notice. Washington politicians will continue to be unpopular with the American people if they focus on the wrong issues and do so in a way that divides the American people. Wake up, Washington—our economy is hurting.

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Police are reporting that Operation take back netted 74 pounds of unwanted prescription medication turned into the Ridgewood Police department on Saturday April 27th on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day .
To reiterate the Ridgewood Police as to why should you turn in your unused or unwanted prescription medications for proper disposal :
Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse.
Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision.
The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America.
The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends – and the home medicine cabinet.
Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.

Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands
Our main Spring/2013 Project covers the stretch of land that runs along North Broad Street, east of the train tracks. This is an area that has been severely neglected for many years. Our project is divided into two parts. The first would be to improve the area either side of the main train staircase by removing the overgrown cedars and bushes either side of the staircase and planting a four foot bed of daylilies and two hawthorn trees, along with repointing the staircase and painting the railings and lampposts. The second would improve the area from south of the staircase to the end of East Ridgewood Avenue by installing a sprinkler system, filling in the missing bushes and trees along the train tracks and planting five dogwoods in the grassy area.
In order for our Spring/2013 Projects to be a reality, we need to increase our fund-raising. We ask you to join our membership. The Village of Ridgewood has a long tradition of excellence; its remarkable history is vividly reflected in its parks and open spaces, enjoyed by generations of residents and visitors. Mary Therese Rose Crilly was born in 1998 with Joubert Syndrome a rare genetic disorder which left her profoundly disabled. Though physically limited, Mary’s limitless love and courage inspired those closest to her to establish a fund in her name to benefit special needs children
being treated out of the Kireker Center for Child Development. The Fund provides needed therapies and equipment that are so often denied by insurance companies because of lifetime insurance benefit limits or simple denial of reasonable claims.
Each year The Mary Therese Rose Fund helps families pay for needed equipment like orthotics, braces, and standers. It also funds activities such as horseback riding that are therapeutic and brighten the lives of these special kids. It is the goal of The Mary Therese Rose Fund to help
these special children reclaim some of the simple joys of childhood denied them by their disabilities. Though Mary passed away in 2003 her brief life was filled with joy. State DEP fines Ridgewood $10,000 in fines for violations in two departments

Ridgewood is on the hook for more than $10,000 in fines payable to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The Village Council this month agreed to pay the state agency for violations committed by two separate departments in 2011. A pair of resolutions was passed April 10 to accept the penalties, which were part of a settlement agreement, assessed to Ridgewood Water and the Fleet Services division of the Department of Public Works.
The village’s water company, which provides service to customers in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park and Wyckoff, was cited for its alleged failure to monitor and report nitrate concentrations at one specific location. The sum amounted to $3,500.
The DEP, through National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, requires community water system operators to comprehensively test and report nitrate concentrations in the water to their customers each year. DEP records and lab reports noted Ridgewood Water’s lack of compliance with those standards.
Oops! Economic Growth Wasn’t So Great After All

U.S. economic growth regained speed in the first quarter, but not as much as expected, which could heighten fears the already weakening economy could struggle to handle deep government spending cuts and higher taxes.
Gross domestic product expanded at 2.5 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Friday, after growth nearly stalled at 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter. The increase, however, missed economists’ expectations for a 3.0 percent growth pace.
Part of the acceleration in activity reflected farmers’ filling up silos after a drought last summer decimated crop output. Removing inventories, the growth rate was a tepid 1.5 percent.
PSEG may take over Long Island electric utility

New York State officials are considering turning over operation of Long Island’s troubled electric authority — harshly criticized for its response to superstorm Sandy — to Public Service Enterprise Group, parent company of New Jersey’s largest utility.
It’s among several options being discussed concerning the Long Island Power Authority, including the possibility of selling it to a private utility, a spokesman for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday.
A unit of Public Service Enterprise Group, PSEG Long Island LLC, already won a 10-year contract to distribute electricity to LIPA’s 1.1 million customers in late 2011. New York officials have begun talking to PSEG about possibly expanding that agreement to include most other LIPA functions, including budgets, customer service, computer systems and storm response. The discussions with PSEG were first reported by Newsday on Thursday.

Congressional leaders in both parties are engaged in high-level, confidential talks about exempting lawmakers and Capitol Hill aides from the insurance exchanges they are mandated to join as part of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, sources in both parties said.
The talks — which involve Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), the Obama administration and other top lawmakers — are extraordinarily sensitive, with both sides acutely aware of the potential for political fallout from giving carve-outs from the hugely controversial law to 535 lawmakers and thousands of their aides. Discussions have stretched out for months, sources said.
The chief of the FAA told Congress today that Washington-area airports will largely escape the effects of the air traffic controller furloughs — a blessing for lawmakers who fly out of the nation’s capitol.
Michael Huerta, head of the Federal Aviation Administration, told a congressional panel that the Washington region’s airports are spaced out enough and have enough spare capacity that furloughs to air traffic controllers won’t hurt as much here.
Saudi National Questioned in Boston Bombings Was Allegedly Flagged on Terror Watch List

The Saudi national once considered a “person of interest” in the Boston Bombings and who Blaze sources say was being considered for deportation as early as Tuesday was apparently flagged on a terror watch list, according to Fox News reporter Todd Starnes.
Blaze sources say Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi was linked in some way to the Boston Bombings in a deportation document.
Fox News’ Todd Starnes is reporting that Alharbi was allegedly on this list and granted a student VISA without being properly vetted. These accusations come from a source who is purportedly familiar with the investigation. Starnes has more:
The Saudi national who was initially detained and then ruled out as a suspect in the Boston Marathon terrorist attack had been flagged on a terror watch list and was granted a student visa without being properly vetted, sources have told me.
A source close to the investigation revealed that Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi had been deemed inadmissible under the section of the Immigration and Nationality Act which declares ineligible for a visa – any alien who is engaged in or is likely to engage after entry – in terrorist activity.
At least two additional sources have confirmed to me that Ali Alharbi is set to be deported as early as this week, contrary to statements made by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. […]
Napolitano denied anyone was being deported in a heated exchange Thursday with Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) during a House hearing.
“I am unaware of anyone who is being deported for national security concerns at all related to Boston,” she said. “I don’t know where that rumor came from.”

Chryssoula , Yes, I have lot’s of thoughts on the Boston Bombers. First, the one thing that bothers me the most is this feeling I have that something is not right with this whole story. After careful research of the two suspects, I find it very,very hard to believe that someone like the younger Brother, who seemed so normal, grew up in the States, wasn’t really that religious, and after looking at his twitter account; that he would suddenly turn within the last two years into a terrorist, or some radical “jihadist.”
Chryssoula , I do believe that his brother brainwashed him, after his trip to Russia, and I am also highly convinced the Russians are somehow involved in this.
Chryssoula, After the attacks, I have done a lot of research on Chechens, their religion, and their resistance against Russia; Chechens are Sufi Muslims…Sufism is not necessarily associated with radical Islam, it is a more spiritual,and peaceful version of Islam…
Chryssoula , I also do not believe these attacks were religious related…some form of “jihad” like so many now say…furthermore, what I found really interesting, was that a couple days before the bombings occurred, the Boston Globe had reported on their Twitter account that Boston Police or officials were going to have the bomb squad out practicing and having detonations going on near the Library which was right at the finish line…
Chryssoula , I am not saying that the suspects are completely innocent, but until the younger one confesses or there is hard core evidence that he was the one who placed the bag with the explosives on the ground; I believe there is more to this story than we know. After all, we had NEVER had an incident were Chechens had any reason to attack the US JUST because they’re Muslim? Sounds a little off to me. Or maybe I’m just all into conspiracies 🙂
TRB : Were not the Chechen Rebels the group that took over a Russian school under the guidance of al Quada ? Did not they follow the al- Quada play book? I do agree with you that the younger brother at lest not on face value appears not to fit any profile at all , but what was the influence of his older brother and it seems like they had NO parental guidance what so ever .
Chryssoula , Yes, you are right about the school take over, however, whether they were following the al-Qaida play book or not, has not been determined 100%, it was assumed that they were. Chechens after the Russian resistance had found their faith in Islam again after many centuries, and have turned back to their religious roots.
Chryssoula , But, like I said, they are Sufi Muslims…I don’t see Sufi Muslims be radical towards the US, at least not in the last three decades. Therefore, I do believe they have been brainwashed, at least the older brother, when he visited Russian a year before that.
Chryssoula , Chechens don’t have any beef with the US, at least not on religious grounds. I could see them doing an incident like this in Russia…but I don’t know..I don’t see a motive.
