Caffeinated Gum? Really?

Ridgewood NJ,  These days, it seems foods and drinks with added caffeine are everywhere –from sodas, to sports and energy drinks, potato chips, candy and now gum.  The rapid growth in caffeine-infused foods and drinks has caught the attention of the Food and Drug Administration, which is considering placing limits on food makers’ ability to add caffeine.  Specifically, they want to investigate the safety of caffeine-infused foods and drinks and their effects on children and adolescents.

This trend warrants a look.  There are potential health risks for children and adolescents who consume this stimulant.  The latest recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is that so-called energy drinks containing caffeine should never be consumed by children. Unfortunately children often confuse energy rinks with sports drinks.

Sports drinks contain carbohydrates, minerals, electrolytes, and flavoring, and are intended to replace water and electrolytes lost through sweating during exercise.  Although they may be useful for young athletes participating in prolonged, vigorous physical exercise, they tend to be overused and are usually unnecessary.

Unlike sports drinks, energy drinks contain stimulants including caffeine, guarana, and/or taurine. Rigorous review and analysis of the medical literature suggest that energy drinks are never appropriate for children or adolescents.  Because caffeine has been associated with harmful neurologic and cardiovascular effects in children, caffeine-containing beverages, including soda, and other foods with added caffeine should be avoided.

The AAP has issued recommendations that pertain to the use of sports drinks and energy drinks in children and adolescents, but can also be applied to other types of caffeine-infused foods.  They include the following:

• Parents need to be made aware of the distinction between sports drinks and energy drinks. The terms should not be used interchangeably.
• Energy drinks should never be consumed by children or adolescents, because the stimulants they contain pose potential health risks.
• Children and adolescents should avoid routine consumption of carbohydrate-containing sports drinks, which can increase the risk for overweight, obesity, and dental erosion.
• For pediatric athletes, sports drinks should be consumed in combination with water during prolonged, vigorous physical activity, when rapid replenishment of carbohydrates and/or electrolytes is needed.
• For children and adolescents, water, not sports drinks, should be the principal source of hydration.

Rep. Scott Garrett Makes Statement on Terrorist Joanne Chesimard

Ridgewood, NJ – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), issued the following statement after the FBI added Joanne Chesimard to the Most Wanted Terrorist list for her 1973 murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster:

“New Jersey officials have made several attempts to have Ms. Chesimard extradited, but their efforts have been unsuccessful.  In the wake of the 40th anniversary of the cold-blooded murder of Trooper Forester, I once again implore the Obama Administration to make Ms. Chesimard’s extradition a top priority.  By aiding a convicted murderer, Cuba has insulted not only the state of New Jersey but also the U.S. legal system and U.S. law enforcement officers.  Joanne Chesimard robbed Rose Foerster of a husband, Eric Forester of a father, thousands of state troopers of a beloved colleague, countless others of a dependable friend, and the state of New Jersey of an outstanding public servant.  Good conscience cannot allow her crimes to continue to go unpunished.”

Background:  According to court testimony, New Jersey State Troopers stopped James Costan in 1973 for driving a vehicle with a broken taillight and slightly exceeding the speed limit.  When Mr. Costan was asked to exit the vehicle to explain a discrepancy on his photo identification, passenger Joanne Chesimard pulled out a gun and shot Trooper Foerster.  In the ensuing firefight, Trooper Foerster was killed.

In 1977, Ms. Chesimard was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.  After serving only two years of her sentence, she successfully escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey.  She eventually reappeared in Cuba in the 1980s.  According to authorities, she had been granted political asylum by the former Cuban president, Fidel Castro.

On May 2, 2013, the 40th anniversary of the cold-blooded murder of a New Jersey state Trooper, Joanne Chesimard, was named a Most Wanted Terrorist by the FBI—the first woman ever to make the list.

Ridgewood YMCA and Kula For Karma Offer Free Yoga for Veterans: Free six-week program begins Tuesday, May 7 at the Ridgewood YMCA

The Ridgewood YMCA, in cooperation with Kula For Karma, will be offering a free 6-week yoga program for veterans on Tuesday evenings from 6:15 to 7:15pm beginning May 7.

The one-hour weekly class will explore basic poses to strengthen and balance the body, therapeutic poses to restore the body, guided deep relaxation and visualization techniques to manage injuries and trauma, breathing techniques to calm and invigorate the body, manage mood, improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, and meditation to focus and discipline the mind.

No previous experience with yoga is necessary. Modifications of poses will be taught for any participants with specific physical challenges.

Tax Freedom Day Is Here for New Jersey

Ridgewood NJ, Tax Freedom Day has finally arrived in New Jersey! Yet, it’s not really cause for celebration, is it? After all, New Jerseyans like you and me are now working more than a third of the year just to pay our tax bill at all levels of government!

Tax Foundation economist Kyle Pomereau put the tax burden into stark perspective. Kyle noted that “we will be paying more in taxes than we pay for food, clothing and housing combined.”

Think about that for a second. The levels of government taxation are exceeding the cost of living—of paying for the bare essentials in life.

Fun Facts : New Jersey taxpayers have to work 124 days of the year, until May 4, just to pay our entire federal, state and local taxes. Our state now has the second highest tax burden of any state in the country.

New Jersey lags behind economically with a 9% unemployment rate, the highest in the region.

Since 2000 property taxes have shot up some 75%. Income taxes are up. The sales tax has gone up. Spending has gone up over 60% and our state debt has more than doubled.

New Jerseyan are witnessing an erosion of economic freedom that means having to work longer and harder just to make ends meet. It means less money in our pockets to save for our golden years or to put money away for our kid’s education. More than that, it means having to give up that night out to dinner, trip to a ball game or summer vacation—costing us precious time with our family and loved ones.

The tax-and-spend model has driven New Jersey to the brink. It’s time to rein in Trenton and free hard-working New Jerseyans from the shackles of Big Government in order to bring economic prosperity back to the Garden State!

Park entrances in Ridgewood may soon rock

The Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands (CRPL) is moving forward on its founders’ pledge to provide funding and support for the restoration and improvement of all the village’s parks.

Landscapers recently retained by the volunteer organization were completing beautification work on the east side of the Ridgewood train station this week. The project was the first major undertaking since CRPL announced its formation and mission statement last fall.

Group members have now laid the groundwork on their next initiative, which has already won the support of the village’s Parks and Recreation Department. According to Ridgewood Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck, CRPL hopes to install new signage at the entrances of each park in town.

They Are Murdering Small Business: The Percentage Of Self-Employed Americans Is At A Record Low

The percentage of Americans that are working for themselves has never been lower in the history of the United States.  Once upon a time, the United States was a paradise for entrepreneurs and small businesses, but now the control freak bureaucrats that dominate our society have created a system that absolutely eviscerates them.  This is very unfortunate, because by murdering small business, the bureaucrats are destroying the primary engine of job growth in this country.  One of the big reasons why there are not enough jobs in America today is because small business creation is way down.  As I mentioned yesterday, entrepreneurs and small businesses are being absolutely devastated by rules, regulations, red tape and by oppressive levels of taxation.  If anyone doubts that small business in the United States is dying, just look at the charts below.  Sadly, this is what the bureaucrats that run things want.  They don’t want us to be independent of the system.  Instead, they are much more comfortable when as many of us as possible are heavily dependent on the system in one way or another.  If all of us have to go running to the government or to one of the big corporations for a job, then we are much easier to control.  But as the control freaks continue to construct their bureaucratic utopia, they are also killing off what once made the U.S. economy so great.

Obamanomics : Wealth Gap Among Races Has Widened Since Recession

WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans suffered a loss of wealth during the recession and the sluggish recovery that followed. But the last half-decade has proved far worse for black and Hispanic families than for white families, starkly widening the already large gulf in wealth between non-Hispanic white Americans and most minority groups, according to a new study from the Urban Institute.

“It was already dismal,” Darrick Hamilton, a professor at the New School in New York, said of the wealth gap between black and white households. “It got even worse.”

Given the dynamics of the housing recovery and the rebound in the stock market, the wealth gap might still be growing, experts said, further dimming the prospects for economic advancement for current and future generations of Americans from minority groups.

The Urban Institute study found that the racial wealth gap yawned during the recession, even as the income gap between white Americans and nonwhite Americans remained stable. As of 2010, white families, on average, earned about $2 for every $1 that black and Hispanic families earned, a ratio that has remained roughly constant for the last 30 years. But when it comes to wealth — as measured by assets, like cash savings, homes and retirement accounts, minus debts, like mortgages and credit card balances — white families have far outpaced black and Hispanic ones. Before the recession, non-Hispanic white families, on average, were about four times as wealthy as nonwhite families, according to the Urban Institute’s analysis of Federal Reserve data. By 2010, whites were about six times as wealthy.

FEMA addresses flood maps in post-Sandy meeting with Bergen County towns

Six months after superstorm Sandy walloped the state, Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives met with local officials in Bergen County on Tuesday to address questions about home elevation requirements and flood-plain maps.

Officials from 23 Bergen County towns were invited to the two-hour event held at the county administration building in Hackensack. The county-sponsored meeting was the third in a series with FEMA and that are designed to connect towns with the resources needed to recover, said Peter Incardone, deputy chief of staff for the Office of the County Executive.

“We here at the county are mindful of the fact that the circumstances that came to us as a result of Hurricane Sandy didn’t end a day, a week or a month after Sandy,” said Ed Trawinski, the county administrator.

One area of concern was FEMA’s flood maps. When the storm struck, FEMA was already working on revised flood plain maps but issued “advisory” maps for the coastal areas in December to guide rebuilding. The state subsequently adopted those maps that established a higher and significantly expanded flood plain and are used by insurance companies to set premiums as well as govern rebuilding.
