Ridgewood NJ, Rep Garrett continued to question Roy Cho’s ties to the district . Garret told the Record  “Most people don’t know who he is or what he stands for, and that’s because he just moved here,”, pointing to the 63 percent of voters who said they had no opinion of Cho.https://www.northjersey.com/news/little-noticed-congressional-race-heats-up-with-accusation-of-voter-fraud-rare-campaign-help-1.1113943

Cho’s campaign has be mostly been made up of the typical Democrat endorsements , and his pro Obama, pro continuation of the presidents policies . Readers have even dubbed him an”Obamabot”.  Most of his website is used to attack Scott Garrett and misrepresent Garrett’s record ,with little to no substantive discussion on issues .This  Amounts to the same old ,the government knows whats best and is going to save you. Policies let call it Obamnomics, that after 6 years of President Obama resulted in a failing economy, loss of healthcare , weakness in foreign policy , enormous government debt directly impacting the Millennial’s ,who Cho claims to be helping with higher taxes, a weak job market , massive debt , no healthcare and a bleak future .

According to a recent Rasumessen Poll 65% of likely voters  thought the county was going in the wrong direction. ( https://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/right_direction_or_wrong_track )

Roy Cho said that after he graduated from law school in 2009, he considered his parents’ home in Manalapan his primary residence even as he lived in an apartment in New York City and then rented an apartment in Hackensack. Cho used the Manalapan address for voting and taxes, and it was on his driver’s license, he said. https://www.northjersey.com/news/little-noticed-congressional-race-heats-up-with-accusation-of-voter-fraud-rare-campaign-help-1.1113943

Derek Roseman, Cho’s campaign spokesman, told the Bergen Record  Cho decided in April 2013 that he wanted to settle in Hackensack and that he changed his license and other documents to that address. Cho also filed his statement of candidacy in April 2013.https://www.northjersey.com/news/little-noticed-congressional-race-heats-up-with-accusation-of-voter-fraud-rare-campaign-help-1.1113943

“I’m not a carpetbagger, despite the fact that these claims are coming from Congressman Garrett,” Cho said in Paramus. “The reality is I failed to change my voter registration in a timely enough fashion, like millions of other Americans have failed to do.”https://www.northjersey.com/news/little-noticed-congressional-race-heats-up-with-accusation-of-voter-fraud-rare-campaign-help-1.1113943

Garrett Spokeswomen Maggie Seidel countered that by saying he failed to change his registration in a timely fashion, Cho was admitting he broke the law. she continued “Also, millions of Americans who make this mistake aren’t corporate lawyers who are running for Congress,” she said.https://www.northjersey.com/news/little-noticed-congressional-race-heats-up-with-accusation-of-voter-fraud-rare-campaign-help-1.1113943

“Roy Cho should take some time to get his story straight about his voter fraud,” Garrett’s spokeswoman, Maggie Seidel, said in an email to The Record. https://www.northjersey.com/news/little-noticed-congressional-race-heats-up-with-accusation-of-voter-fraud-rare-campaign-help-1.1113943

Ebola is ‘disaster of our generation’ says aid agency

London (AFP) – Aid agency Oxfam on Saturday said Ebola could become the “definitive humanitarian disaster of our generation”, as US President Barack Obama urged against “hysteria” in the face of the growing crisis.

Oxfam, which works in the two worst-hit countries — Liberia and Sierra Leone — called for more troops, funding and medical staff to be sent to tackle the west African epicentre of the epidemic.

Chief executive Mark Goldring warned that the world was “in the eye of a storm”.

Who Do They Think We Are?

The administration’s Ebola evasions reveal its disdain for the American people.

The administration’s handling of the Ebola crisis continues to be marked by double talk, runaround and gobbledygook. And its logic is worse than its language. In many of its actions, especially its public pronouncements, the government is functioning not as a soother of public anxiety but the cause of it.

An example this week came in the dialogue between Megyn Kelly of Fox News and Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control.

Their conversation focused largely on the government’s refusal to stop travel into the United States by citizens of plague nations. “Why not put a travel ban in place,” Ms. Kelly asked, while we shore up the U.S. public-health system?

Dr. Frieden replied that we now have screening at airports, and “we’ve already recommended that all nonessential travel to these countries be stopped for Americans.” He added: “We’re always looking at ways that we can better protect Americans.”

“But this is one,” Ms. Kelly responded.

Dr. Frieden implied a travel ban would be harmful: “If we do things that are going to make it harder to stop the epidemic there, it’s going to spread to other parts of—”

Ms. Kelly interjected, asking how keeping citizens from the affected regions out of America would make it harder to stop Ebola in Africa.

“Because you can’t get people in and out.”

“Why can’t we have charter flights?”

“You know, charter flights don’t do the same thing commercial airliners do.”

“What do you mean? They fly in and fly out.”

Dr. Frieden replied that limiting travel between African nations would slow relief efforts. “If we isolate these countries, what’s not going to happen is disease staying there. It’s going to spread more all over Africa and we’ll be at higher risk.”

Later in the interview, Ms. Kelly noted that we still have airplanes coming into the U.S. from Liberia, with passengers expected to self-report Ebola exposure.

Dr. Frieden responded: “Ultimately the only way—and you may not like this—but the only way we will get our risk to zero here is to stop the outbreak in Africa.”

Ms. Kelly said yes, that’s why we’re sending troops. But why can’t we do that and have a travel ban?

“If it spreads more in Africa, it’s going to be more of a risk to us here. Our only goal is protecting Americans—that’s our mission. We do that by protecting people here and by stopping threats abroad. That protects Americans.”

PISCATAWAY — Betim Bujari has been on the winning end of 33 games since arriving at Rutgers, but the fifth-year senior center has no trouble ranking Saturday night’s 26-24 triumph over Michigan.

“Best moment of my life tonight, just being out there on the field, first Big Ten win, having the student section run out and celebrate with us, can’t describe it,” Bujari said. “It’s electrifying.”

Rutgers’ second Big Ten affair was not unlike its first: a tradition-rich college football powerhouse, a raucous capacity crowd, a lead for much of the game.

And then, in the time it takes to read this sentence, Michigan had rallied from a 26-17 fourth-quarter deficit, threatening to take the lead as it set up for a long field goal in the waning minutes.

It had all the makings of the 13-10 gut-punch at the hands of Penn State three weeks ago until Kemoko Turay jumped high in the air to bat down a 56-yard field goal attempt, preserving a 26-24 triumph that figures to live for the ages.

“It’s something you remember forever,” Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova said after throwing for a career-high 404 yards and three touchdowns on 22-for-39 passing. “The reason why you play college football is for moments like that.”

When it was over, after the Scarlet Knights (5-1, 1-1) moved within one victory of bowl-eligibility with their first Big Ten win, thousands of black-clad fans stormed the field to soak in the celebration.

Obama has had accurate intelligence about ISIS since BEFORE the 2012 election, says administration insider

Obama has had accurate intelligence about ISIS since BEFORE the 2012 election, says administration insider

A national security staffer in the Obama administration said the president has been seeing ‘highly accurate predictions’ about the rise of the ISIS terror army since ‘before the 2012 election’
Obama insisted in his campaign speeches that year that America was safe and al-Qaeda was ‘on the run’
The president said during Sunday’s ’60 Minutes’ program that his Director of National Intelligence had conceded he underestimated ISIS
But the administration aide insisted that Obama’s advisers gave him actionable information that sat and gathered dust for more than a year
‘He knew what was at stake,’ the aide said of the president, and ‘he knew where all the moving pieces were’
Obama takes daily intelligence briefings in writing, he explained, because no one will be able to testify about warning the president in person about threats that the White House doesn’t act on

President Barack Obama’s intelligence briefings have provided him with specific information since before he won re-election in 2012 about the growing threat of the terror group now known alternatively as ISIS and ISIL, an administration insider told MailOnline on Monday.

‘Unless someone very senior has been shredding the president’s daily briefings and telling him that the dog ate them, highly accurate predictions about ISIL have been showing up in the Oval Office since before the 2012 election,’ said a national security staffer in the Obama administration who is familiar with the content of intelligence briefings.

The staffer declined to share anything specific about the content of those briefings, citing his need to maintain a security clearance.

But ‘it’s true,’ he said, ‘that the [intelligence] community was sending pretty specific intel up to us.’

‘We were seeing specific threat assessments and many of them have panned out exactly as we were told they would.’

Millennial« Generation Wuss »
by Bret Easton Ellis

In his books, he used to shoot at the materialistic excesses of his generation. But today, youth has become Bret Easton Ellis’ favorite target. According to him, young people are just too sensitive, too narcissistic ,too stupid. But ultimately, as he explains in this exclusive text, he kind of feel sorry for them ( and they love it !).

In February I gave an interview to Vice UK to help promote a film I had written and financed called The Canyons—I did the press because there was still the idea, the hope, that if myself or the director Paul Schrader talked about the film it would somehow find an audience interested in it and understand what it was: an experimental, guerilla DIY affair that cost $150,000 dollars to shoot ($90,000 out of our own pockets) and that we filmed over twenty days in L.A. during the summer of 2012 starring controversial Millennials Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. The young journalist from Vice UK asked me about the usual things I was preoccupied with in that moment: my admiration of Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street—the best film I saw in 2013 (not great Scorsese, but better than any other American film that year) and we talked about the movie I’m writing for Kanye West, my love of Terrence Malick (though not To The Wonder), a miniseries I was developing about the Manson murders for FOX (but because of another Manson series going into production at NBC the miniseries has now been cancelled), the Bret Easton Ellis Podcast (link), the possibility of a new novel I had begun in January of 2013 and that I lost interest in but hoped to get back to; we talked about my problems with David Foster Wallace, my love of Joan Didion, as well as Empire versus post-Empire (link) and we talked about, of course, The Canyons. But the first question the young journalist asked me wasn’t about the movie—it was about why I was always referring to Millennials as Generation Wuss on my Twitter feed. And I answered her honestly, unprepared for the level of noise my comments caused once the Vice UK piece was posted.

Rep Scott Garrett Statement on the Obama Administration’s Decision to Spread Too-Big-To-Fail to more companies

Rep Scott Garrett Statement on the Obama Administration’s Decision to Spread Too-Big-To-Fail to more companies
Sep 4, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises, issued the following statement regarding today’s Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) decision to spread too-big-to-fail:

“Today’s irresponsible and inappropriate designation of another U.S. business as too-big-to-fail only strengthens my resolve to reform the out-of-control FSOC.  First and foremost, we must ensure taxpayers are not on the hook for FSOC’s dangerous regulatory overreach.  This designation flies in the face of a unanimous, bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives to postpone any additional designations.

“The FSOC makes politically motivated decisions to expand the Fed’s power with little-to-no real-world analysis.  To make matters worse, the FSOC refused to even provide today’s designee with the same minimal level of review that the Council provided for asset management companies.  It is obvious that the FSOC refuses to improve its operations, conduct, or decision-making processes. Accordingly, it is incumbent upon Congress to help FSOC improve itself.  I look forward to having members of the FSOC come before the Committee in the near future to explain today’s actions.”

Rep Scott Garrett Says with immigration reform his first priority is to his constituents

“Our immigration process is broken and overly complex. I agree that we need to fix it. As an elected official, my first priority is to my constituents. I am first going to look out for their interests by enforcing our laws. I am first going to make certain that they are safe by advocating for policies that prioritize our national security interests. And I am first going to lay the groundwork for robust economic and education systems for them.

Unfortunately, the administration’s actions—refusing to enforce our current laws—are putting our citizens last, not first. The House has taken steps to change this by addressing the crisis at the border. This bill would better secure the border, assist our border patrol agents in their law enforcement duties, and expedite the judicial processing and deportation of illegal migrants. As this immigration debate continues, we must follow today’s actions with a broader, step-by-step approach to our immigration problems, where securing our borders, fixing our legal immigration system, and putting the American people first are the chief priorities.”

Obamanomics: Meet Four Business Owners Squeezed by Operation Choke Point

Meet Four Business Owners Squeezed by Operation Choke Point
Kelsey Harkness / @kelseyjharkness / August 12, 2014

With no explanation, Brian Brookman last month lost the bank account for his pawn shop.

He had no idea why. Brookman says his store in Grand Haven, Mich., never had been in trouble with federal or state officials. And being in the pawn industry, he was required by law to get a city license every year.

“If there was ever a problem, they wouldn’t renew my license,” Brookman, a former police officer and Army veteran, told The Daily Signal.

After researching his case on the Internet, Brookman says he concluded that his banker, JP Morgan Chase, closed the account because two of his business activities — dealing in vintage coins and selling firearms — were labeled “high risk” by federal bureaucrats as part of an Obama administration initiative called Operation Choke Point.

Critics say Operation Choke Point, so dubbed by Department of Justice officials, seeks to weed out businesses that the White House considers objectionable.

The Justice Department contends the goal of the program is to combat unlawful mass-market consumer fraud, although recent evidence suggests otherwise.

A House report indicates that a primary target of Operation Choke Point is the short-term lending industry. A more expansive list of out of favor, non-financial businesses includes certain ammunition merchants, coin dealers, home-based charities, and sellers of pharmaceutical drugs – also lawful enterprises.

Alden Abbott, the Rumpel senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, describes how Operation Choke Point works: Banks receive notifications from federal regulators, including the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (the agency responsible for insuring bank deposits), that the government considers certain types of businesses “high risk.” Banks then are pressured, though the implied threat of government investigations, to sever ties with customers engaged in those enterprises.

This puts business owners such as Brookman in jeopardy of losing their livelihoods without ever being prosecuted for doing anything illegal. Abbott said:

Government officials have no authority to deny lawful industries access to credit merely because the government dislikes their line of business. That runs counter to the rule of law. Only unlawful activity merits sanction.

Though they consider themselves in peril of losing customers and coming under further government scrutiny, Brookman and three other owners of small businesses spoke with The Daily Signal about being caught up in Operation Choke Point. One is a cancer survivor,  one used to run a manufacturing company, and one is an Air Force veteran who moved back to his hometown to open a store.

Each previously came forward through the United States Consumer Coalition, a grassroots, free-market organization that encourages business owners to share their stories.

Steve Stratford, 72
Secure Account Services, LLC
Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Stratford’s business provides payment-processing services to a variety of client companies and law firms in the debt-relief industry. Because of Operation Choke Point, he says, it has been on the verge of collapse twice in the past year.

Stratford  says he worked in commercial real estate development after moving to Arizona to enjoy boating and desert exploration. In 2009, he  started Secure Account Services.  In the 1990s, he operated a business that manufactured rescue equipment, and had worked in the ski industry  from the late ’60s to the mid-’80s.

In spring 2013, Stratford was surprised when both Chase Bank and Horizon Community Bank closed his business  accounts, one after another. By law, his company’s funds must be held in a government-insured bank account. Without one, Stratford — whose title is director of operations – can’t do business.

“At the time these events were taking place, we were completely at a loss to explain what might have gone wrong,” recalls Stratford, who has two grown children and five grandchildren.

Doing some research, he came across information on Operation Choke Point. He then contacted the banks to ask whether government officials had exerted some “undue influence.”

A risk management representative for Chase confirmed his suspicion.

Confidentially, Stratford says, the bank employee told him Chase had sent letters to “hundreds of companies in similar industries in obedience to directions from several federal agencies, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency at the Department of Treasury.”

The banker told him that if his Chase branch didn’t “mitigate that risk,” all of its accounts could be audited.

“We can imagine the agony there,” Stratford says. “For what little gains they get off of a small company like ours is simply not worth their resources.”

Stratford and his seven full-time employees found another bank, but he remains uneasy about Choke Point.

“If there has been something that we were doing wrong, we would certainly like to know what that is so we could rectify that,” he says.

Sandra Perry, 72
Cash Express
Las Vegas, Nev.

Despite having an excellent track record, including an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau, Sandra Perry couldn’t find a local bank to serve her business, Cash Express.

Perry says her branch in Mesquite, Nev., which offers auto title and storefront cash loans, apparently was considered too risky by the bureaucrats running Operation Choke Point .

Three different banks and two credit unions wouldn’t let her open a local account. “I was told that the money service business is too ‘high risk’ for the banks,” says Perry, a stage IV cancer survivor.

“I was told that the money service business is too ‘high risk’ for the banks.”

Perry is still searching for a bank to do business with her Mesquite location. Without one, she has to make frequent trips between Las Vegas and Mesquite, which are 80 miles apart.

Perry also worries that future regulation leaves the viability of her business in limbo. “We don’t know what’s around the corner,” she says.

Her two employees are concerned that the job security they once had is gone.

Perry, now engaged, says she is forced to push off retirement.

“I’m 72, but because of economic uncertainty caused by Choke Point, I am not planning on retiring and sipping mai tais on a sandy beach anytime soon,” she says.

Brian Brookman, 43
West Michigan Pawn
Grand Haven, Mich.

Brian Brookman was a police office for 10 years before joining the Army after 9/11. When he got out, he and his wife of 16 years moved to Grand Haven, Mich., to start a private security agency.

Last fall, Brookman sold his agency to open a pawn shop. On the side, he sold firearms, but decided to let that license expire in June because of “overregulation.”

In July, he opened an account for the pawn shop with a local Chase Bank, where he and his wife had been private customers for years. Two weeks later, without warning, Brookman received a letter saying the bank was closing that new account.

“The only account they closed is my business account,” Brookman says. “It was strictly targeted at my business, and the only reason they would have targeted my business is because of Choke Point.”

Chase refused to elaborate, Brookman says, but he decided they either thought he was still selling firearms or categorized him as “high risk” for buying and selling vintage coins.

“There’s just no explanation,” he says.  “It has to be Operation Choke Point.”

Brookman successfully opened a business account at another local bank. To his dismay, though, he received an email from PayPal saying the Internal Revenue Service has an issue with his account because of new regulations.

“I have heard many stories about PayPal closing accounts on gun dealers,” Brookman says. “But I’m no longer a gun dealer.”

Mark Cohen, 65
Powderhorn Outfitters
Hyannis, Mass.

Marc Cohen has been a Second Amendment supporter for years. After a four-year hitch in the Air Force beginning in 1970, he moved back to his home in Cape Cod to open Powderhorn Outfitters, a sporting goods store that sells guns and outdoors equipment.

Eleven years ago, he lost his wife to cancer. He remarried five years ago, Cohen says, after he  “got lucky and found somebody else.”

Three months ago, Cohen had a rude introduction to Operation Choke Point. After approaching TD Bank for a new line of credit, he was rejected because of his involvement in the firearms industry.

Cohen says his bank manager of more than 20 years told him: “I’m very sorry to say this – I’m very embarrassed – but the bank won’t lend you money because you sell guns.”

Cohen’s TD Bank manager told him: “The bank won’t lend you money because you sell guns.”

Cohen was stupefied. “My credit and history are 100 percent,” he says.

When he came across Operation Choke Point on the Internet, Cohen was outraged.

He had bills to pay and six employees to support. “I depended on this,” he says.

Three weeks later, Cohen was able to find a bank that he says “would accept a second-class citizen.”

Now, he speaks out against the government operation.

“I can’t take on a Department of Justice and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation,” Cohen  says. “I’d love to, but I can’t.”

Instead, he’s sharing his story, which he says has resulted in more than 600 of his Powderhorn customers leaving TD bank.

“They were livid,” Cohen says. “I had one young lady call me up and say, ‘I just closed my account from TD bank and I stood back about 10 feet away from the counter and announced to the whole bank why I was closing my account.’ ”

What does he think of the Obama administration’s actions?

“Choke Point is an affront to the American way of life.”

IRS Abolishes Mandatory Expiration Dates For Illegal Immigrants’ Taxpayer Status

IRS Abolishes Mandatory Expiration Dates For Illegal Immigrants’ Taxpayer Status

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) quietly changed regulations to allow more undocumented immigrants to keep their taxpayer status through a program that is rife with fraud and abuse, and to delay deactivation of immigrant taxpayer status until 2016.

The IRS now prevents peoples’ Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from automatically expiring after five years as previously mandated. Now immigrants can keep their ITIN so long as they pay taxes at least once in a five-year period.

The ITIN program is primarily used by undocumented workers to follow the law and file income taxes in the United States. Reports came out during the IRS scandal linking ITIN fraud to billions in lost taxpayer dollars. The IRS was forced to reform the ITIN program at the start of 2013 – but this new regulation undoes that reform.

Barney Frank ‘Appalled’ By Obama Administration: “They Just Lied To People”

Barney Frank ‘Appalled’ By Obama Administration: ‘They Just Lied To People’

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama made a major political mistake by lying about the details of his health care plan, according to former House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.).

“The rollout was so bad, and I was appalled — I don’t understand how the president could have sat there and not been checking on that on a weekly basis,” Frank told HuffPost during a July interview. “But frankly, he should never have said as much as he did, that if you like your current health care plan, you can keep it. That wasn’t true. And you shouldn’t lie to people. And they just lied to people.”

Obama has taken significant flak in conservative circles for claiming that his health care overhaul would allow all existing health care plans to continue, when, in fact, new consumer protection standards would require some people to sign up for more comprehensive insurance. The law provides government subsidies to help people of modest means pay for the more robust plans. Frank is a strong supporter of the law, and he has repeatedly defended Obama and his legislative agenda.

“He should have said, ‘Look, in some cases the health care plans that you’ve got are really inadequate, and in your own interests, we’re going to change them,'” Frank said. “But that’s not what he said.”

Lawmakers Throw Light on Secretive ‘Operation Choke Point’

Kelsey Harkness / @kelseyjharkness / July 15, 2014 /

‘No place to stop’: Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., on Operation Choke Point. (Photo: Flickr)

Is “Operation Choke Point” about to get choked by Congress? Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., sure hopes so.

Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is calling for the dismantling of what he calls a secretive initiative launched by the Obama administration in early 2013.

Critics say that Operation Choke Point, so dubbed by Department of Justice officials under Attorney General Eric Holder,  seeks to weed out businesses from the marketplace that the Obama administration considers objectionable. According to The Wall Street Journal, it was an outgrowth of the Financial Fraud Task Force, established by President Obama’s executive order early in his first term.

The initiative, Issa said last week, is a slippery slope:

“If you empower the government to pick winners and losers within a lawful enterprise, then there is no place to stop.”

Initially, in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, officials targeted small-dollar, nonbank lenders. But it grew to include other legal, legitimate businesses such as gun dealers and tobacco vendors at Walmart and Bass Pro Shop.

Issa, speaking on Operation Choke Point at Cato Institute, called it “proactive, progressive activity” by government against banks and other legitimate businesses.

“Fraud should be prosecuted,” Norbert Michel, research fellow in financial regulations at The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal. “They don’t have to use the banking system to shut out every single player in an industry to do that.”

House Republicans already have passed legislation prohibiting funding for Operation Choke Point. This week, the Justice Department initiative comes under further scrutiny in three House settings:

This morning at 10, the oversight and investigations subcommittee of the Financial Services Committee wasscheduled to hold a hearing on the Justice Department initiative.
Today at 2 p.m., the Financial Services Committee’s subcommittee on financial institutions subcommittee was set to hold a hearing on a new bill by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.), the “End Operation Choke Point Act of 2014.”
Thursday at 9:30 a.m., the Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on regulatory reform will hold a hearing entitled “Guilty Until Proven Innocent?” on whether Justice has the legal authority to execute the operation and possible collateral damage to legitimate businesses.

One official at Justice, quoted anonymously in a  Wall Street Journal report last summer, said the initiative was intended to change “the structures within the financial system that allow all kinds of fraudulent merchants to operate,” with the intent of “choking them off from the very air they need to survive.”

By “air,”the DOJ means money. The Obama administration uses Operation Choke Point to intimidates banks from doing business with merchants it deems “high risk,” Issa and other critics say.

For example, Issa said in his remarks last week, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation officials make “inappropriate” phone calls to banks and payday lenders, pressuring them to sever ties with businesses the government considers “reputational risks.”

Mark Calabria, Cato’s director of financial regulation studies, said FDIC pressure is an enormous weight over the financial industry.

“When the federal government maintains the discretion to decide which bank gets rescued and which does not, it should be clear that banks in practice have little choice but to cooperate,” Calabria said.

Despite his opposition to the initiative, Issa has yet to endorse legislation to end Operation Choke Point. Instead, he said:

We’ve got to do what baseball pitchers do anytime somebody’s crowding the plate. And that is, we’re going to put the ball close enough that either they’re going to jump back, or we’re going to hit them with the ball. … What they’re doing is wrong, and we’ve got to show that.
