WALDWICK, NJ — A swift response by the Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department (WFD) prevented a potentially serious situation this afternoon on Franklin Turnpike.

At approximately 5:14 p.m., the WFD received a report of smoke filling the second floor of a local office building. Given the location and the time of day, crews moved quickly to secure the scene and ensure the safety of any remaining occupants.

Quick Action on Franklin Turnpike

Upon his arrival, Chief Agugliaro observed a worsening smoke condition and immediately requested a “working fire” assignment. This proactive call brought additional resources to the scene to prepare for an aggressive interior attack.

The crew from Engine 1 arrived shortly after, stretching a dry hand line into the structure to stand ready as they searched for the source of the smoke. Simultaneously, the team from 64 Truck took to the roof to check for extensions and provide ventilation.

The Source: HVAC Unit Secured

After a thorough investigation of several second-floor offices, firefighters pinpointed the culprit: a malfunctioning HVAC unit. Firefighters were able to secure the power to the unit, effectively neutralizing the threat.

Once the unit was shut down, the WFD transitioned to ventilation, using high-powered fans to clear the remaining smoke and odors from the building, allowing for a safe return to the premises.

A Community Effort

The Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department extended its gratitude to the mutual aid partners who responded to the call. The seamless coordination between local departments is a cornerstone of public safety in Bergen County, ensuring that even “minor” incidents are handled with maximum professional efficiency.
