RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The next generation of first responders got a taste of the action this week as Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 hosted its annual “Take Your Children to Work Day.” It was far from a typical day at the office. While many children spend the day shadowing their parents in cubicles or meetings, the children of Ridgewood’s bravest traded pens for nozzles, experiencing firsthand what it takes to protect the Village.

Hands-On Training for Future Heroes
The “junior members” didn’t just watch from the sidelines; they participated in several essential firefighting drills under the watchful eyes of their parents and fellow firefighters.
The day’s training highlights included:
-
Operating the Hose Line: Kids felt the power of the water as they learned how to aim and control a professional hose line.
-
Hitting the Hydrant: A core skill for any firefighter, the young visitors learned how to secure a water source and open a hydrant.
-
Station Life: Beyond the training, the children got a behind-the-scenes look at the daily routines and camaraderie that define life at the Ridgewood firehouse.

Building Community and Legacy
“A great time for all!” noted the FMBA Local 47. These events are more than just fun and games; they foster a deep sense of respect for public service and strengthen the bond between the department and the families who support them.
By giving these kids a chance to “step into the boots” of their parents, the Village of Ridgewood continues its tradition of community engagement and inspiring the public servants of tomorrow.
