THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
A request from Ridgewood’s solid waste department has given rise to a question that goes beyond the simple complexities of the popular paper or plastic debate. In the village, issues of worker safety and the environment are at the forefront.
Council members are mulling over changes to the municipal sanitation collection policy, particularly with increasing environmental concerns and risk of on-the-job injuries as a result of improperly disposed materials. At a work session meeting earlier this month, the council began discussion on the possibility of requiring residents to use only plastic bags when tossing out their trash.
“There are environmental problems because [residents] are using inappropriate materials or none at all,” said acting Village Manager Heather Mailander. “I was actually surprised to hear that there are some residents who take their garbage cans and waste baskets from their kitchens and house and dump [the contents] into their outside garbage cans without a bag or anything,”

It makes sense to have bags so the garbage men don’t have to push their big barrel up every driveway.
I saw at least 5 homes that tried to help the garbagemen by leaving a few black plastic bags at the curb of what I assume is xmas trash (wrapping paper etc) and the it still sits there, ignored after 2 pickups. So much for trying to help out!
Will the expected increase in the raccoon population be considered racial diversity?
Will the council pay for the plastic bags? What is wrong with paper, it is all going in the back of a garbage truck.
Why can’t the Link provided here for this North Media story be LIVE ?
Perhaps, its just another “garbage” story, that gets to mileage.
Why not use the golf carts/ quads that the village already owns?
That way our garbagemen could drive up the long driveways.
Or get small pickup trucks with containers in the back (as private carters do)
I don’t mind using plastic as I already do.
In the interest of efficiency, the garbage men put the plastic bags in a pile on a block, picked up by the truck shortly thereafter. (not a good idea if they leave it there long enough for the birds to rip the bags open)
