Ridgewood NJ, In an era where community safety is a top priority, the Village of Ridgewood is taking proactive steps to ensure its first responders are ready for any crisis.
This week, the Ridgewood Police Department spearheaded a comprehensive active shooter tabletop exercise. This high-level training session brought together a powerhouse of local leadership, including representatives from the Ridgewood Fire Department, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Village administrative staff, and Ridgewood Public Schools.
Strengthening the Shield: What Happened During the Training?
Unlike a field drill, a tabletop exercise is a collaborative “war room” style session where leaders walk through complex, high-pressure scenarios in real-time. This week’s program focused on the critical pillars of crisis management:
-
Emergency Planning: Reviewing and refining existing safety protocols.
-
Scenario-Based Discussions: Testing decision-making skills against evolving threats.
-
Incident Command: Clarifying who leads and how resources are deployed.
-
Communications & Information Sharing: Ensuring seamless contact between police, fire, and school officials during a chaotic event.
By fostering this level of coordination, Ridgewood ensures that if a critical incident ever occurs, the response will be fast, effective, and unified.
What is Active Shooter Training?
Active shooter training is a specialized form of emergency preparedness designed to teach individuals and organizations how to prevent, respond to, and recover from an active shooter event.
For law enforcement, it involves tactical maneuvers and rapid-response strategies. For community partners like schools and village staff, it focuses on the “Run. Hide. Fight.” protocol, situational awareness, and the logistical coordination required to keep citizens safe while assisting first responders.
The ultimate goal of these exercises is resilience—minimizing harm through rigorous practice and mental preparation long before a threat ever materializes.
