RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A spectacular single-vehicle crash sent shockwaves through downtown Ridgewood late Tuesday afternoon, leaving a luxury vehicle precariously perched and creating massive gridlock just as the evening rush hour peaked.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 30, 2026, a dark-colored Mercedes SUV traveling westbound on Garber Square careened wildly off the roadway. The vehicle lost control, veering directly up a steep dirt embankment alongside the road and coming to a rest at a dangerous, near-rollover angle.
Miraculously, authorities confirmed that the driver of the Mercedes walked away from the harrowing ordeal completely uninjured.
Firefighters Move Quickly to Prevent a Rollover
The unique positioning of the SUV presented an immediate hazard for first responders. Because the vehicle was stuck on a severe incline, there was an active threat that it could tip over onto its side.
Emergency crews from the Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 and Ridgewood FD/EMS arrived on the scene instantly. Firefighters worked efficiently to secure and stabilize the heavy luxury SUV using specialized rescue equipment.
Once the vehicle was blocked and deemed safe, a flatbed tow truck was brought in to meticulously winch and extricate the passenger vehicle from its high-angle predicament.
Major Traffic Delays Across Downtown Ridgewood
While the driver escaped harm, local commuters weren’t as lucky. The prominent location of the crash near Garber Square caused a massive bottleneck.
The Ridgewood Police Department Patrol Division swarmed the area to manage the chaotic scene. Officers took over manual traffic control and launched an immediate investigation into what caused the driver to leave the roadway.
Sections of the downtown sector experienced bumper-to-bumper gridlock for a couple of hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene, though paths have since completely reopened.
