Tenafly NJ, in a closely contested referendum, Tenafly voters have officially approved a $76 million proposal for school improvements. The final results, certified on Wednesday, came after a nail-biting vote on Sept. 17 that was too close to call on election night. After all mail-in and provisional ballots were counted, the proposal was passed by a slim margin of 1,199 votes in favor and 1,187 opposed.
The referendum asked voters to approve upgrades to every school in the district, as well as district offices and the athletic complex. Improvements will include essential safety and security updates, upgraded heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) systems, enhanced accessibility, and modernization of instructional spaces to meet current educational standards.
The approved plan will be funded in part by $16.5 million in state aid, with the remaining $59.5 million covered by local taxes. For homeowners, this will mean a significant average annual tax increase of $881 for properties assessed at Tenafly’s average value.
The district will post regular updates on the status of the projects on its website, ensuring the community stays informed as improvements roll out.
This victory marks a significant investment in the future of Tenafly’s schools, aimed at providing a safe and modern learning environment for students.
