Mahwah NJ, A quiet Sunday evening at Continental Soldiers Park turned into a terrifying ordeal when a young boy was attacked by a beaver. On May 3, around 6:00 p.m., Mahwah police responded to Lake Henry following reports that a wild animal had charged a child.
A Sudden Encounter at Lake Henry
According to Mahwah authorities, the 8-year-old boy was fishing from the shoreline when the beaver unexpectedly exited the water and charged toward him. In an attempt to escape, the boy tripped, allowing the animal to bite him in the upper thigh.
The situation could have been much worse if not for a family acquaintance. The witness intervened, striking the beaver multiple times to drive it back. Even after the intervention, police report that the animal remained aggressive, circling the immediate area.
Medical Response and Public Safety
Mahwah EMS quickly arrived on the scene and transported the child to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment.
While investigating the incident, officers discovered that this may not have been an isolated event. Reports and online videos suggest the same beaver may have targeted other park visitors earlier that Sunday.
The Investigation: Was the Beaver Rabid?
Animal control officers successfully captured and removed the beaver from Lake Henry. Preliminary observations indicated the animal showed signs of illness. It has been taken for testing to determine if rabies or another disease contributed to the uncharacteristic aggression.
Public Notice: If you or someone you know encountered this animal at Lake Henry on Sunday, May 3, please contact the Mahwah Police Department at (201) 529-1000 ext. 210.
