Known for his theatrical flair, operatic baritone, and personalized home run calls, Sterling wasn’t just a narrator of the game—he was the heartbeat of Yankees baseball for generations of fans.


A Legacy Defined by 5,631 Games

Sterling’s career was defined by an almost superhuman reliability. Between September 1989 and July 2019, he broadcast 5,060 consecutive games, a streak that cemented his status as a “Cal Ripken Jr.” of the airwaves.

By the time he initially retired in April 2024, Sterling had called:

  • 5,420 Regular-season games

  • 211 Postseason games

  • 36 years as the primary voice of the New York Yankees
