The New Jersey Student Climate Advocates Express Concerns over the Decision of the Ridgewood Village Council to Remove Trees at the Schedler Property

Dear Mayor Paul Vagianos, et al,

We are writing on behalf of the New Jersey Student Climate Advocates to express our concerns over the decision of the Ridgewood Village Council to remove trees at the Schedler property for the building of a turf field. It directly contradicts the fundamentals of the recently passed Green Amendment, as it jeopardizes the conservation and maintenance of Ridgewood’s public natural resources.

Citizens of Ridgewood have reached out to us to express their worries about the direct environmental impact on their lives by the removal of the green canopy. The artificial sports field does not serve the needs or wants of the community, and instead directly endangers their environment. By removing the trees surrounding the Schedler property, the drinking water, noise pollution, and air quality of Ridgewood will be drastically impacted. Not only will residents living in surrounding neighborhoods lose protection from highway NJ Route 17, but the frequent fly-over zone for airplanes in and out of Newark will have less of a barrier to air pollution.

The Green Amendment prioritizes every person’s “right to a clean and healthy environment, including pure water, clean air, and ecologically healthy habitats, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic qualities of the environment.” This amendment will be directly violated by moving forward with these plans. Council members have even shared the same sentiment: at a recent council meeting it was said that “I love this amendment, I think we should do it, but this is completely contradictory to what we’re going to do at Schedler.”

The Zabriskie-Schedler property is an important historical property and an environmentally necessary natural barrier. As one of the last remaining wood frame houses in Bergen County, tearing it down means artifacts and history are permanently lost, and citizens’ quality of life is endangered for an unwanted sports field.

As a coalition of high school, college, and graduate students who wish to ensure the security of our future, we share the concerns of the many students and community members of Ridgewood. We hope that you will consider the health of the environment and the wellbeing of your citizens, and evaluate more sustainable courses of action.

Sincerely,
Eva Sharma, Jayden Junaid – Community Action Team

  1. Might we see the return of Belly Button Boy ?

    1. Who is that?

  2. Great Letter, well written, the problem is he doesn’t care , neither does Even or Wine-o-Grand

    1. That is the problem. They don’t care. Look what a nightmare Habernickel became. They just gave away the park to a business

      1. Yes, that is exactly what they want. Someone mentioned it last week (SW?) that these properties ideally should be money making. Except who knows if Ridgewood is the one who is making the money! I heard Health Barn (supposed to be a non profit) is raking it in doing parties and events 24/7 but according to the Habernickel website is only supposed to be 9-5:30!

        1. Town should stop buying land if it’s just going to become a giveaway for the personal benefit of whoever is sitting on the dais. Ugh.

          1. This is totally for a benefit of someone else and council should be aware. Instead they turn a blind eye. The question is why??? Why don’t the care??? Hmmmm

        2. The business is allowed about 60 hours of operation time. Ridgewood shares profits for MAYBE 3-4 events a year. And they only get 40 percent. If that is still true. Otherwise the 60 hours of operations goes to only the business. Ridgewood is losing money. They have to constantly repair the house and property. They would be making more money on a residential lease and not have all the repairs of the turn over a business is bringing in. Do we have a business manager because this is a LOSS

      2. It’s insane what goes on over there if people open their eyes. Gave away the park , noise and bus pollution. Destroying property ( grass ). Terrible. All for the benefit of one person. The owner of the business

  3. winny grad , and “mr wall street” dont even know where the property is, and perron is a vag puppet

    1. Wino did a video in front of Healthbarn promoting feed the front lines. HB is NOT non profit. The farthest thing from it.

  4. Ridgewood voters have only themselves to blame , they continue to vote to destroy the town to promote the AOC vision of Ridgewood

    1. Precisely. Go woke, go broke. They hated Trump and voted Biden and they will do it again. Same with local politics, they didn’t want Knudsen because their feelings got hurt by her stance on pedestrian plaza and they voted some mediocre puppets and they will do the same again and again. They are so engulfed by hate that even clear lies told by this council during election campaign doesn’t bring light to their brains.

    2. They sure do

    3. Hopefully they will now help undo it

      1. Don’t count on it.

        ‘cuz, we’re…
        RICH and STUPID

  5. who pays the 500 per tree that a homeowner gets whacked if we remove a tree

    1. I wish this was true but it isn’t. Nobody in the village gives a damn about what you cut in your property. All they want is a permit fee of $50 and that’s it. They have confirmed it to me over the phone. That ordinance does nothing because it is not enforced the way it was meant to.

  6. It is very sad that the Village Council, except for Lorraine, does not show that they are truly sustainable and Green in their actions. They talk out of one side of their mouths by proclaiming that trees are important but then want to cut them down because a ballfield is more important. There must have been some very lofty campaign promises made by Paul, Siobahn and Evan. Pam just follows along. Lorraine is the only one truly standing up for doing what is right.

    1. Have any council members followed no mow may?

      1. Wasn’t Mo’ one of the Three Stooges..
        Just Sayin,,

      2. Doubtful

  7. We told you it’s in the toilet

  8. They don’t care. We the people have to get rid of 4 of the 5. Is it possible. I doubt it

    1. Next year the 4-year terms of Vagianos and Perron will expire. Does that give you any ideas?

Anybody with some oomph want to run? Get started now.

  9. Listen to the kids

  10. Call channel 12 news

  11. Listen to the Woke, Brainwashed, Indoctrinated kids.

    1. At least they have a soul and a brain!

      1. Ha.
You’re as clueless and brainwashed as they are.

They have no brains, and not much of a soul either.

  12. Hypocrites. Look at the now 6 percent tax increase. Wine-O-grad was running around like her little blonde head was on fire over the last council’s 3 percent tax increase during COVID. That lying idiot was saying 3 percent was way too much.
So I guess if you’re brain dead then a 6 percent tax increase is better than 3. I picked a really bad time to stop sniffing glue.
As for next year’s election, that’s when you will see the full playbook unveiled. Once Vag and his dopey sidekick are re-elected they will have four votes and two years to implement some major zoning changes that will directly benefit their developer friends. They just have to keep that part quiet until after the election because if they started doing it now, it would damage their re-election chances. Some of us have watched this same situation play out in the recent past, and now we get to see it again.

    1. Not to worry.
      We are RICH and STUPID
