Newark NJ, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey strongly encourages travelers by air, rail and road to allot additional travel time during the five-day July Fourth holiday travel period. More than 5.5 million passengers are expected to use Port Authority airports, bridges and tunnels between Thursday, July 3 and Monday, July 7, which would represent similar volumes to the same period in 2024.

The agency anticipates nearly 2.2 million passengers will travel through John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and New York Stewart International airports from Thursday, July 3 through Monday, July 7. This anticipated volume would be a new record for the July Fourth holiday period, representing an increase of 1 percent compared to the same period in 2024. Thursday and Monday are expected to be the busiest days at the region’s airports.

The Port Authority strongly encourages all air travelers to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time. Travelers should expect longer wait times due to higher passenger volume and ongoing construction. All passengers on domestic flights should arrive at the airport at least two hours in advance of their departure time and passengers on international flights should arrive at the airports at least three hours in advance of their departure times. Travelers are strongly advised to check the Port Authority’s air travel tips for information on preparing for their trips, including how to find real-time wait time information for TSA security lines, information on parking lot availability, AirTrain maps and schedules, directions for public transit and for-hire vehicle information.

The agency expects a record number of travelers to use John F. Kennedy International Airport during the July Fourth travel period, a 3 percent increase over 2024. This heightened demand for travel through JFK will occur amid major construction underway for the agency’s ongoing $19 billion redevelopment of JFK, which includes significant updates of the airport roadway network. These roadway changes at JFK are required to accommodate the work underway to transform JFK into a world-class global gateway with new terminals, local concessions, family-friendly amenities, and a best-in-class air travel experience. Travelers can visit Construction.JFKAirport.com for customized travel impacts.

If possible, JFK customers should use mass transit to and from the airport, such as MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subway or buses, or MTA Long Island Rail Road — with 20-minute trains from Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station to the AirTrain JFK station at Jamaica. To encourage the use of mass transit to JFK, the Port Authority has reduced the single one-way AirTrain JFK fare by half to $4.25, which applies at the two off-airport stations that require payment via OMNY or MetroCard: the Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, both of which connect to MTA services.

Motorists and anyone using for-hire vehicle services should plan ahead for delays or reroutes by avoiding pick-ups or dropoffs directly at the airport terminal frontages. The Port Authority encourages the use of its free drop-off, pickup and waiting lot at AirTrain JFK’s Lefferts Boulevard station, where passengers can easily connect to the free on-airport AirTrain for an eight-minute ride to airport terminals.

As many as 3.3 million vehicles are expected to cross the Port Authority’s bridges and tunnels from July 3 through July 7 based on recent travel trends, which is similar to traffic volumes from the same period in 2024.

A separate travel advisory for any lane closures or service changes for the remainder of the week after July Fourth will be issued next week.

  • To manage on-airport parking demand at Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Travelers who do not pre-book will be charged a peak period drive-up surcharge and may not be able to find a parking spot at the airport.
