Ridgewood NJ, on Sunday May 7th  the Schedler Neighbors held a “Walk and Talk” ,hosted by naturalist, Lauren Lynch. It was a great opportunity to take a look at the property for those who have never been there.

A group of 40 plus friends and neighbors met at 460 West Saddle River Road , right off of Route 17 . Naturalist, Lauren Lynch guided the group through the wooded property discussing the different types of trees on the property as well as the interaction of plant species with each other .

The discussion centered around Native species of plants vs Invasive species. Native species of plants are those that naturally occur in a particular ecosystem or region. They have evolved to live in harmony with the other organisms in that ecosystem, and they play important roles in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. They are adapted to the local climate, soil, and other environmental conditions, and they are often a crucial food source for local wildlife.

Invasive species of plants, on the other hand, are non-native plants that have been introduced to an ecosystem, either intentionally or unintentionally. They can have negative effects on the ecosystem by outcompeting native species for resources, disrupting the food chain, altering the physical characteristics of the environment, and reducing biodiversity. Invasive species often have no natural predators or controls in the new ecosystem, allowing them to reproduce and spread rapidly.

In general, it is important to protect and conserve native species of plants, as they are a critical part of the natural environment and provide important ecosystem services such as oxygen production, soil stabilization, and carbon sequestration. Invasive species, on the other hand, should be managed and controlled to prevent them from causing harm to native species and the environment as a whole.

One resident even suggested that Ridgewood school kids should visit the property to learn about the local natural environment. We know it doesn’t cost enough but it is still a very good idea.

It did not appear that any of the Village Council attended , while its abundantly clear from council meetings that most of the council has never visited the site ,nor do they have any idea where it is .

While we are big fans of RBSA , the decision to renege on the previous historical agreement and clear cut well over 200 trees , lay down a turf field and  build a 24/7  athletic complex on Route 17 will clearly be detrimental to the quality of life in the neighborhood and destroy an 8 acre ecosystem which includes wetlands and rare native species not often seen in this area.

The turf will also destroy a historic spot where Washington troops camped during the court-martial of General Lee held at Old Paramus Church . The turf would eliminate any chance of discovering any further archeological treasures that my lie on the site.

West Saddle River road is way to narrow , there is no where near enough parking and there is no way to get out of the area without major congestion. This creates a serious problems for Emergency services , police and fire.

And on a final and more personal note , baseball is played on grass ,not on carpet. If you don’t get it , baseball is played on grass for the same reason golf is played on grass.

  1. Gorgeous day and really informative event. It is really sad that this Village Council majority, except for Lorraine, does not see the benefit and beauty of this property, the natural barrier that protects this neighborhood from all of the particulates and will surely put neighbors and visitors health and safety in harms way as they only care about looking like big heroes to the sports community of Ridgewood.

  8. Sorry but I expected many more people to attend. This low participation brings an opposite effect. If anything this event solidifies in the eyes of the fast food manager and the other washed up little politicians that they “have the support” of the village majority to move forward.
Focus on legal aspects if you want to defeat this monstrosity. It is clear by now that RW residents do not care unless it is in their own backyard.

    1. it sad how far down hill the town has gone , this used to be a great town , now it become just another sh$thole in NJ
