Ridgewood NJ, Americans find themselves in a tipping dilemma, navigating through the rise of “tipflation” and evolving expectations. A Pew Research Center study involving 12,000 US adults reveals that 72% believe tipping is now expected in more places than five years ago. However, 40% oppose businesses suggesting tip amounts, and 72% are against automatic service charges or tips on bills.

The nation is divided on tipping, with 21% viewing it as a choice, 29% as an obligation, and 49% as situation-dependent. While 77% consider service quality a crucial tipping factor, only 34% find it easy to determine whether and how much to tip, leading to widespread confusion. Despite a consensus on tipping in specific scenarios, gray areas persist, such as tipping at fast-casual restaurants (12%) or when grabbing coffee (25%). The majority (57%) tip 15% or less at sit-down restaurants, emphasizing the diversity of tipping practices across different contexts.

  1. Reservoir Dogs

  2. People should not be forced or guilted into paying a tip for basic counter service, it is ridiculous

  3. The whole thing is out of control!! I was at a Wawa getting a bagel only. Hell NO am I gonna tip for someone just passing it me.

    1. I think the bigger concern is why you are getting bagels from Wawa.

  5. They probably get sushi form Wawa.

    1. Settle down people. There is so much vitriol usually in these comments about important (and not so important) issues and people are offended by a sarcastic but damn funny comment about a Wawa bagel.

  6. To the poster who keeps calling us rich and stupid in many blog stories.
It is getting really old and very offensive by calling us stupid. Just because we are lucky to live in Ridgewood at this time, doesn’t make us stupid!

    1. Where exactly does the offense lie?; in being called “rich” or “stupid?” Or “rich AND stupid?” You really think it’s a matter of luck that you live in Ridgewood? I guess you are stupid … and marginally rich. Marginally. Very marginally. I hate to break it to you but living in Ridgewood doesn’t make you rich. Far, far from it.

Also, Wawa has pizza now. Make of that what you will.
