Why We Commemorate: “We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident”
The Declaration of Independence stands as the bedrock of American democracy. Adopted on July 4, 1776, it formally announced the American Colonies’ break from British rule and established the philosophical foundation for self-governance.
By asserting that all individuals possess inherent rights and that a government must remain strictly accountable to its people, it marked the birth of the United States as a sovereign nation.
Tonight’s community gathering is a unique opportunity to reflect on those shared values, honor local history, and join a powerful nationwide chorus marking a quarter-millennium milestone. Bring your family, your friends, and your civic pride!
