Hackensack NJ, a major accident occurred on Interstate 80 near Exit 65, involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer that led to a multi-vehicle collision. The incident resulted in a significant fire and multiple individuals being trapped in their vehicles.
Emergency responders, including Hackensack Fire Deputy 3, Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 4, and Rescue 1, arrived promptly at the scene. Their swift actions in extinguishing the fire and extricating the victims from their vehicles .The New Jersey State Police are currently investigating .
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred 11:43 p.m. on Tuesday near milepost 66.6 in Hackensack. Preliminary investigations by state police reveal that a Toyota SUV traveling eastbound in the local lanes struck a curbed median, veered into the express lanes, and collided with a Volvo tractor-trailer. The impact caused the Volvo to crash into the center concrete median and enter the westbound express lanes, where it collided with an Isuzu box truck, which subsequently burst into flames. A GMC SUV traveling westbound also collided with the Volvo tractor-trailer.
Casualties and Injuries
Tragically, the driver and passenger of the Isuzu box truck were killed. Their identities are pending confirmation. The driver of the Volvo tractor-trailer, a 63-year-old man from Temple, Texas, and his passenger, a 60-year-old man from Killeen, Texas, sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The driver and passenger of the GMC SUV suffered minor injuries.
Road Closure and Reopening
Due to the severity of the crash, the express lanes of Route 80 were closed until just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday. All lanes have since been reopened in both directions, allowing for the resumption of normal traffic flow.
