Two Men and One Juvenile Arrested in Armed Garfield Carjacking

Garfield NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrests of CHRISTOPHER GONZALEZ (DOB: 08/27/2003; single; unemployed) of 85 Mercer Street, Paterson, NJ; RAEKWON J. NORWOOD (DOB: 01/19/2003; single; unemployed) of 83 Garfield Avenue, Paterson, NJ; and a 17-year-old JUVENILE with carjacking, armed robbery, weapons and theft offenses. The arrests are the result of an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Garfield Police Department under the direction of Chief Richard Uram.

On Sunday, May 14, 2023 at approximately 8:00 p.m., the Garfield Police Department received a report of an armed carjacking that occurred on Botany Street. Four male suspects, two of whom were armed with a handgun, approached a Garfield resident who was sitting in his Lexus sedan outside his home. Two of the suspects pointed their firearms at the victim and demanded his vehicle, cash, and jewelry. The victim was able to get out of his car and run to safety, while the four men fled the scene in the stolen Lexus. The Garfield Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Squad, and a joint investigation was initiated.

During the investigation, CHRISTOPHER GONZALEZ, RAEKWON J. NORWOOD, and a 17-year-old juvenile were identified as suspects.

On August 28, 2023, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office detectives and Garfield Police Officers executed court-authorized search warrants at the suspects’ residences in Paterson, NJ. Two firearms were recovered from one of the residences, and all three suspects were arrested without incident. The fourth suspect has yet to be identified.

CHRISTOPHER GONZALEZ was charged with first-degree carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2a(1); first-degree armed robbery, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(1); second-degree conspiracy to commit carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:15-2a(1); second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); third-degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(1); third-degree theft, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3a; fourth-degree possession of a firearm by a certain person not to possess firearms, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-7a; and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4). GONZALEZ was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

RAEKWON J. NORWOOD was charged with first-degree carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2a(1); first-degree armed robbery, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(1); second-degree conspiracy to commit carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:15-2a(1); second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); third-degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(2); third-degree theft, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3a; and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4). NORWOOD was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

The JUVENILE was charged as a juvenile delinquent with first-degree carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2a(1); first-degree armed robbery, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(1); second-degree conspiracy to commit carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/2C:15-2a(1); second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); third-degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(2); third-degree theft, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3a; and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4). The JUVENILE is being held at a juvenile detention facility pending a first appearance in the Chancery Division, Family Court, in Hackensack NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the Garfield Police Department for its assistance with the investigation.
