Two Newark Men Charged With an Armed Home Invasion Robbery in Cresskill

Cresskill NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrests of JAMES LANIER (DOB: 9/16/1998; single; unemployed) of 141 Park Avenue, Newark, NJ and CARLOS SANCHEZ (DOB: 1/24/1999; single; unemployed) of 50 Fenwick Street, Newark, NJ, both currently incarcerated at the Monmouth County Jail, on charges related to an armed home invasion robbery in Cresskill, NJ. The arrests are the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office (“BCPO”) under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Cresskill Police Department under the direction of Chief James Domville.

On Sunday, September 25, 2022 at approximately 11:07 am, officers from the Cresskill Police Department responded to a reported armed home invasion robbery on Kennedy Drive in Cresskill, NJ. Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Squad also responded and initiated a joint investigation. The ensuing investigation determined that a victim who was home at the time of the incident was held at gunpoint in the residence for a substantial period of time and several items were stolen. The motor vehicle utilized during the armed home invasion robbery was determined to have been stolen several days prior in another New Jersey county, and utilized in several additional crimes, including an attempted motor vehicle theft and burglary on Inness Road in Tenafly, NJ on September 24, 2022.

During an approximately six-month-long joint investigation, JAMES LANIER and CARLOS SANCHEZ were identified as suspects.

On Friday, March 10, 2023, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office served LANIER and SANCHEZ with their criminal complaints without incident at the Monmouth County Jail, where they are both currently incarcerated on charges unrelated to this investigation.

JAMES LANIER and CARLOS SANCHEZ were each charged with first degree kidnapping, N.J.S.A. 2C:13-1b(1); first degree armed robbery, N.J.S.A 2C:15-1a(1); fourth degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4); second degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, 2C:39-4(a); third degree theft of movable property, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3(a); two counts of second degree receiving stolen property, N.J.S.A. 2C: 20-7(a); three counts of third degree burglary to a motor vehicle, N.J.S.A. 2C: 18-2a(1); and second degree armed burglary, N.J.S.A. 2C: 18-2b(2).

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the New Jersey State Police, Auto Theft Task Force-South; Woolwich Police Department, Toms River Police Department, Monroe Police Department, Tenafly Police Department, Newark Police Department, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with the investigation.
