Weehawken NJ, A Utah man who allegedly made antisemitic threats while driving across the country was arrested just outside New York City, according to NYPD officials.
Suspect Traveled from Utah to NYC Making Threats
The suspect, Luis Ramirez, reportedly drove from Utah through Kansas City and Philadelphia, making threats against Jewish people along the way, police said. Law enforcement agencies, including NYPD detectives, were tracking Ramirez as he made his way toward New York.
On Friday evening, Ramirez was stopped on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel by Port Authority Police at around 5:30 p.m. He was taken into custody, and authorities began searching his vehicle for any potential weapons. However, initial reports did not indicate any firearms were found.
Ramirez Allegedly Mentioned Central Synagogue
Authorities believe Ramirez was heading toward Central Synagogue in Midtown Manhattan, though officials stressed there was no explicit or direct threat made against the synagogue itself. However, police noted that Ramirez had allegedly mentioned the location at some point during his journey.
Ongoing Investigation and Charges
Ramirez is expected to face state charges from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, according to police officials.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages, and at this time, there is no indication that Ramirez was part of an organized plot to carry out an attack.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the nature of the threats, including searching Ramirez’s phone for additional information.
Heightened Security and Community Response
In response to the arrest, New York law enforcement has increased vigilance around Jewish institutions. With antisemitic threats on the rise, officials urge the public to remain alert and report suspicious activity to authorities.
This incident underscores the ongoing concerns over antisemitic threats and violence, particularly in major metropolitan areas like New York City.
