Ridgewood NJ, the newly dedicated Earl A. Wheaton, Jr., MD, Family Care Center has officially opened its doors at 223 N. Van Dien Ave. in Ridgewood, taking over the former location of The Valley Hospital Emergency Department. Previously situated on Goffle Road in Hawthorne, the state-of-the-art facility is now part of Valley Health System’s brand-new Ridgewood campus, which opened in April.
Family members of the late Dr. Earl A. Wheaton Jr., along with Valley Health System staff and leadership, gathered for the dedication ceremony, celebrating Dr. Wheaton’s legacy. Dr. Wheaton, an internist and rheumatologist, began his career at Valley Health in 1960 and served until his retirement in 2002. He passed away in 2021, leaving behind a lasting impact on the medical community.
A Legacy of Care and Education
The new Wheaton Family Care Center offers a range of outpatient services, including primary care, pediatric care, prenatal services, and specialty appointments. It also serves as the outpatient offices for Valley Health’s Graduate Medical Education program, launched in 2023. The center is appointment-only and accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and NJ Charity Care Assistance to ensure accessibility for all patients.
During the dedication, Audrey Meyers, Valley Health System CEO emeritus, spoke about Dr. Wheaton’s lifelong commitment to medicine, his patients, and educating future physicians. “There is no more fitting space to honor Earl’s legacy than this one,” she said. “The Family Care Center will serve our community and provide a place for our new class of residents to train and grow as physicians.”
Dr. Wheaton’s son, Tim Wheaton, also shared his thoughts, reflecting on how much Valley Health meant to his father. “It wasn’t just a place to work for my father. It was an institution that he cherished,” he said. “This center will not only benefit Ridgewood and its surrounding communities but will also carry on my father’s dedication to education and the medical profession.”

With the opening of the Earl A. Wheaton, Jr., MD, Family Care Center, Valley Health System honors Dr. Wheaton’s contributions and ensures his commitment to care and education will continue for future generations of physicians and patients alike.
