Ridgewood NJ, a garbage truck owned and operated by the Village of Ridgewood struck a balcony in a garden apartment complex on Heights Road, Ridgewood on Friday morning, 04/09. No injuries were reported in the mishap and the truck was able to drive away on its own power. However, the balcony was severely damaged and deemed unusable. Firefighters from Ridgewood FD made the scene safe. A Village of Ridgewood construction code official was called to inspect for structural damage. Ridgewood Police also responded.
Shit happens!
I love stuff like this…!
RFD…saved another balcony.
AWESOME
At least no one got hurt. Was anyone backing the recycling truck up. This is what happens when you have one person on the Recycling truck. There should always be a least two people on the refuse truck.
We believe that with a CDL license, when backing up you should have a spotter. Don’t quote us, we believe that was in the manual. We can’t believe that the village sends out recycling trucks with one man on it, that’s extremely dangerous. Whoever started that was not looking at the safety aspect in matter. It was never like that years ago.
That sounds about right. I think OSHA needs to be notified regarding one man on the truck. That is ridiculous. We wonder if the back up cameras were operating. I can imagine how many are not working. We think they should be an investigation. Before somebody gets suspended or fired. Because the village shoots from the hip before knowing the facts.
It is NOT a requirement for the CDL .
It mentions when backing your vehicle up that you have a “spotter” in place for guidance.
There’s only one person taking the exam, not 2.
And OSHA has nothing to do with staffing .
Well then did the driver have a spotter. And do these Certified drivers have a spotter every time they back up. If not why. What happens if there was someone walking. And how can there only be one man on a Recycling truck. That’s Unacceptable. Not for the taxes that we pay it should be full cruise across the board.
You think that’s bad the village is paying the water superintendent Jose Martinez over 100,000 dollars a year to ride his bicycle around on company time. You will see him between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm everyday. Must be great to get paid to exercise.

“You think that’s bad the village is paying the water superintendent Jose Martinez over 100,000 dollars a year to ride his bicycle around on company time. ”
WAIT…. WHAT?!?
Assuming he gets paid for an 8-hour day, it’s time for Mr. Martinez’s salary to be cut from $100k to $75k!
What are you talking about. Is this true.
You know many years ago a garbage truck was backing up and ran over a young girl and killed her. That’s why they made it mandatory to have back up alarms on trucks. And this is not bullshit story. We believe that was back in the 70s
SOunds like a lot of crybaby union employees
Dont these trucks have backup cameras?
You make a LOT MORE here than you would at a private carter. (plus generous health benefits and retirements)
Aren’t these employees in a rush since they get paid for ‘task work”?>
for those of you who don’t know… that means they can go home as soon as their route is completed.. thats why they are hauling ass so they can leave.
A few months ago the town leaf truck took out parts of my neighbor’s fence trying to execute a 7-point turn in a congested area.
Slow down,
The bottom line is we don’t give a shit what anyone says, if you are backing up any kind of big truck, school bus, transportation, there should be someone spotting for you. From our investigation one employee on a recycling truck is ridiculous. It’s an accident waiting to happen over and over again. Why would the village put one employee on the recycling truck. It’s just a matter time someone’s gonna get hurt. How can one person drive the truck and pick up all the recycling at the same time this is sick. Who came up with this idea. Nonunion, outside companies, private companies, don’t do this.
We wonder does every recycling and sanitation truck have a back up camera on them. If not they should. I’m sure it’s a big help. It’s definitely a big help in our personal vehicles. Much safer, but then again we are not sure how proactive the village is in safety. We are sure that that should be the number one priority in town and safety right. If we can avoid an accident, someone getting injured, it’s worth it.
*Village installs back up cameras on vehicles*
*1 day later*
The Ridgewood Blog: “WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY JUST LIKE THE GINORMOUS GARAGE THE STREETS ARE FILTHY BIKE GANGS ARE RUNNING WILD IT WASNT LIKE THIS IN THE 60S COVID IS A SCAM RACISM DOESNT EXIST….”
About time they are installing cameras on the trucks. They will do that instead of putting a second man on the truck. Bottom line it’s cheaper
That guy in the water Dept who is Bicycling around what is his title.
No I’m not kidding about him bicycle riding I’ve been photographing it. I believe his title is water superintendent.
I used to work for the village, I got canned for speaking up about things that I thought were unsafe, exactly like this or going out in more than 3 inches of snow. They told me it was because I didn’t receive a license in a time frame they wanted. However there are still employees there with out a CDL license, the village should always have a 2 man crew with recycling and a 3 man crew with sanitation. No way this should have happened. I wonder what the village manager will do about the safety of her employees?
