South Hackensack NJ, commuters faced delays Monday morning as a water main break forced the closure of all lanes on Route 46 in South Hackensack, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The break occurred in the westbound lanes just east of Central Avenue, with reports first coming in around 5:30 a.m. By 9 a.m., the closure was still in effect, prompting officials to direct drivers to follow posted detours.
Crews Work Amid Freezing Conditions
The westbound lanes are closed from Phillips Avenue to Huyler Street, near Teterboro Airport, because of the break.
Crews from Veolia Water are on the scene along with contractors in an effort to stop the water from flowing down the highway and eventually repair the break on the 12-inch line.
The freezing conditions not only complicated the repairs but also posed potential hazards for drivers navigating nearby roads.
Detours in Place
Drivers are advised to check for updates on 511nj.org and plan alternate routes to avoid delays. As crews continue their work, officials urge motorists to exercise caution and patience in the area.
The cause of the water main break remains unclear, though such incidents are not uncommon during sudden drops in temperature, which can put added pressure on aging infrastructure.
