Ridgewood NJ, The Village of Ridgewood is making significant strides with the West Glen Avenue sidewalk project (Phase 1) this week, working in collaboration with Bergen County and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP) to design the remaining sidewalks down to S. Hill Road and Heights Road. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve pedestrian safety, which has become a priority for the Village Council.

Pedestrian Safety Takes Center Stage

Councilwoman Lorraine Reynolds played a pivotal role in advancing the project by reallocating $500,000 originally designated for repairs to the village’s historic Zabriskie-Schedler House. At the May budget meeting, Reynolds argued that lawsuits would likely delay the historic home repairs, making it more prudent to invest the funds in safety improvements that could have a more immediate impact. The West Glen Avenue sidewalk project is expected to cost around $1 million, and Reynolds’ proposal has brought much-needed attention to pedestrian safety.

A Long-Awaited Safety Initiative

The West Glen Avenue sidewalk safety initiative was initially launched by the previous Village administration under Mayor Knudsen, but it was later halted by the current council majority, which includes Mayor Paul Vagianos, Deputy Mayor Pamela R. Perron, and Councilmembers Evan Weitz and Siobhan Winograd. Despite the pause, the project has gained renewed focus due to persistent concerns about pedestrian safety in the area. Over the years, several motor vehicle accidents have been reported on West Glen Avenue and the surrounding streets, highlighting the urgency of the project.

Mayor Vagianos has requested that blueprints for the intersection be prepared as quickly as possible to move the project forward.

Looking Ahead

With the village council now prioritizing pedestrian safety and the support of Councilwoman Reynolds, the West Glen Avenue sidewalk project is set to make a real difference in Ridgewood. As the Village continues to work with Bergen County and the NJ DEP, Ridgewood residents can look forward to safer streets and a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

  1. So many municipalities in this area have few or almost no sidewalks where people actually live and children go to school. Ridgewood’s East Side for the most part is not that way.

The West Glen sidewalk project was always needed to connect East and West for pedestrians.

  2. Election year

  3. This only got done because residents fought for it. Never would have happened. Vagianos is a shrewd schemer, this and other sidewalk projects had to be done and he knew it. Now he will take credit for it and make people think it was his idea. Ha! An election year stunt for sure.
