Westwood NJ, on April 16, 2023, the Westwood Police Department responded to a report of an accident involving a vehicle and a bicyclist at the intersection of Washington and Mountain Avenues. This accident involved very serious injuries suffered by the cyclist, It was a scene that likely will not ever be forgotten by those who responded to render aid. Following the accident, follow ups were made to determine the condition of the cyclist and thoughts and prayers were offered to the young man, whose life appeared to have taken a tragic turn.
Approximately one and a half months after the accident, the cyclist, who was still suffering from major injuries sustained in the crash stopped to visit Westwood Police Department Headquarters to thank the officers who had, by all accounts, saved his life. At the time, the words and actions of the cyclist were inspiring. He indicated that he was thankful for the medical care he received and that he would one day ride his bicycle again, He stated that when he could, he would be back, even offering to go for a ride with the officers, some of whom are avid cyclists themselves. Based on the injuries received, the officers were skeptical, but remained hopeful that he would be able to follow through on his promise. We all wished him a speedy and full recovery, thankful for his visit and the extension of his gratitude.
Time is something that passes quickly…. Yesterday, on August 01, 2023, this young man showed up to Westwood Police Headquarters on a 60-mile bike ride to return to the scene that altered the course of his life and almost took his life from him. As luck would have it, most of the officers who responded to that scene were working and were present to meet and greet him, see him post recovery and see him in much better circumstances. They had the opportunity to listen to his struggles, his triumphs and his desire to achieve in the face of odds not in his favor. He reminded us of some valuable life lessons. This visit completed the promise that he made that he would one day ride again. His speedy recovery happened and defied the expectations of his medical team.
The story is inspiring. It’s a true story which underscores the importance of the never give up attitude. It reminds us how fragile life can be. It reminds us that it is important to keep our promises. It reminds us that no matter the situation, irrespective of the odds, you should believe in yourself. Situations like this are a stark reminder that we can make a positive difference in the world through the police profession.
