This is one of the first photos you see when you go to the new Washington Commander’s website. Clearly a lot of thought went into the production and selection of this gender ambiguous image. But there is more confusion being sowed.
A two minute video titled “We Are The Washington Commanders” begins with the line “Legacies are build by tradition” and shows footage of the Washington Redskins. Can a team have a new name and new uniform and be still be considered part of a an organization with a 90 year history?
“Forget it, Jake,” it’s Washington. It’s the way of this town. Be two completely different things to two completely different sets of people. If you liked the Washington Redskins and didn’t want to see the name changed, it’s the same team. If you were offended by the name and what football used to symbolize, it’s new. Logic and consistency don’t matter.
Most team names comprised of more than two syllables are shortened. The Buccaneers, for example, are called the Bucs. Are fans meant to call the Commander’s the Commies? This may actually be intentional, and it won’t be taken as a put down. Look for a cringe worthy Super Bowl ad for confirmation.
We will probably never know if the name “The Parasites,” ever got any serious consideration. But it would have made for some very unique helmet designs.
If go woke, get broke is the rule, the NFL is proving so far to be an exception. But don’t expect the Commanders to be lifting the Lombardi trophy any time soon. Star players tend to steer clear of places with high taxes and high crime. So Woke-shington Commies fans might have to get used to losing.
Yet another stupid name.
Glad I gave up the NFL.
I find it offensive, since they have been trying to command the population for 2 years.
I find this name very militaristic and offensive.
It glorifies war and violence and other bad things.
I also am offended that it culturally appropriates the armed services, especially the Navy.
It is highly offensive that a group of civilians playing a game are impersonating Naval officers.
Back to the drawing board…
Go back to the Redskins and change the mascot to a potato.
