Rockaway NJ, if you’ve noticed a strong smell of smoke outdoors lately, you’re not alone. Ridgewood Fire Chief posted on Facebook that due to wildfires burning in Rockaway, West Milford, and surrounding areas, residents may detect a heavy smoke odor. He encouraged anyone with concerns to call 911.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported progress on the Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire in Rockaway Township, Morris County. As of 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, crews have achieved 85% containment of the fire, which has burned approximately 202 acres near Notch Road and Green Pond Road.

- Containment & Size: The wildfire is now 85% contained. Initial reports estimated 211 acres burned, but refined mapping has adjusted this to 202 acres.
- Impact on Structures: No structures are currently under threat, down from the 16 previously at risk. Although eight homes were evacuated on Friday evening, residents returned by Saturday morning. Thankfully, no injuries or damage to buildings have been reported.
- Ongoing Efforts: Forest Fire Service crews remain on-site to strengthen containment lines and address hotspots. Smoke is expected to persist until significant rainfall dampens the area, so the community should be prepared for continued smoke in the air.
- Road Closures & Resources: Green Pond Road has reopened, and fire engines and ground crews continue to be deployed for monitoring and containment.
Local fire departments from Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties have supported the effort, ensuring that nearby structures were protected.
