TRENTON — Now that New Jersey’s new 23-cent gas tax increase is on the books, a ballot question asking voters to dedicate the billions of dollars in new revenue to transportation projects is suddenly getting lots of attention.
The once-virtually uncontested question that passed the Legislature with just one “no” vote has become a flashpoint in the fight over the new tax, which hit gas stations Tuesday.
Now supporters of the ballot question are worried voters angry over the higher gas tax will reject the measure.
I got a piece of mail asking for a yes vote.
It was sent by the unions
That’s good enough to vote NO
This issue looks like a no-brainer at first, but seems to be more complicated.
The tax is here. The vote is whether the revenue should be earmarked for transportation projects or whether it can be approproated for other budget needs.
a yes vote automatically triggers another article that permits up to $12 Billion in borrowing. This is something that appears to have been “overlooked” and should have been included with the “commentary” printed on the ballots. Stop spending $’s that do not exist in existing budget(s) and therefore requires borrowing/debt! NJ is already broke. Also look for disclosures on $’s spent from the TTP to service existing debt!?
