Ridgewood NJ, A Saturday night fist fight involving 2 male youths on the grounds of RHS reportedly drew more than 100 spectators and required Ridgewood Police to ask for police assistance from multiple towns and the Bergen Sheriff’s Office to disperse the gathered crowd.  No arrests were made, nor were any injuries reported in connection with the melee.

Police vehicles from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus , Midland Park, Paramus, Waldwick, and Wyckoff were observed at RHS and the surrounding area.  Dozens of youths were seen loitering on streets near RHS and at businesses along North and South Maple Avenues immediately after the police intervened in the situation.
There was no official word on what triggered the altercation, but seemingly everyone except Ridgewood Police knew a fight was going to take place.  “Out of towners” were said to have been responsible for the fracas.

  4. WOW… fighting at RHS seems to be regular occurence – sadly the last one ended with one boy extremely injured. Why did the police allow this fight to proceed if they knew about it? Thankfully no one was injured, but could there have been measures taken to stop the fight from ever happening.

  5. Police do not have their finger on the pulse of the RHS social scene. Maybe someone should sign them up for a Snapchat account!

  7. Wow how stupid does that sound “ out of towners were responsible “. How does that make sense to absolutely anyone at all? Now are infecting children’s lives with politics. Just pathetic. Like kids in Ridgewood don’t fight or have a drug problem

  8. First of all Ridgewood high school is overrated. This is not the 70s or the early 80s, some people believe that Ridgewood high school is still one of the best around. Yes it’s a good school there’s medical schools around us now. Glenrock, northern highlands, Ramapo, northern valley, and nothings better than Hackensack tech.

  10. I’m confused, this story isn’t dated and the links refer to something that happened several years ago. No other news outlet is reporting anything having happened last night. Are you dredging up old news or did something happen last night (May 1st, 2021)?

  11. Not troubled by a fist fight. A normal occurrence. In fact, having grown up outside USA, where boys are raised to become masculine men, I think this is almost mandatory.

I’m a bit troubled by spectator nature of onlookers’ actions. There’s a savage element to watching your peers fight it out. A decent group would’ve attempted to break up the fight. That tells me: 1. Social media-driven culture is insidious and immoral, 2. Fights in RDWD school happen so infrequently that it’s a “show” rather then what it really is – violence. Cuddled up school kids don’t recognize violence when they see it. No wonder they think silence is violence.

  12. May 1, 2021 occurrence. Last night.

  13. Heard there were around 50 kids on bikes there. I’m guessing it’s that same bike crew that has caused so many problems in the past, and yes, they are largely from other towns.

  18. the townies all come and completely vandalize our town it’s so messed up. the fight started bec a bunch of fairlawn kids made fun of an autistic kid that a lot of rwood kids are close with. it’s not fair to pin this on rwood. the townies that dumbed the ports potties in the brook and the ones who sprayed painted vile things should be held responsible

  19. Can. We stop dancing around the issue?
Will someone who knows what happened please speak up? Otherwise without pictures from Boyd I’m gonna believe this isn’t true

  21. It’s true all right. More than a dozen out of town cop cars were zooming into the library parking lot and riding around Vets Field to keep the large groups of kids moving. Jersey Mike’s and Renato’s had cop cars stationed outside. Cops were out in force. Kids were wandering around. It was a mess.

  22. Well, if the above it true then I’d say “Disability Awareness Week” worked in Ridgewood. Guess Fair Lawn needs to learn a thing or two about supporting disabled people. Perhaps RHS students can start some education programs around Disability Awareness week at Fair Lawn H.S. next year…. Think about how good that will look on your college resume…. LOL!!

  24. Blame the cops. Blame the school. No one mention the parents of these kids. Do they have their finger on the pulse of what their kids and friends are doing? Maybe they should go on snapchat.

  25. The kids come to ridgewood to hang out with their friends because the downtown and Highschool is a great place. Unfortunately there are some people who disrespect it and vandalize it, people like these shouldn’t be seen as the majority of out of townies. Most people respect the town and come to enjoy and meet up with their friends. The fight happened because a rhs student was defending a fellow autistic student. Fights like these rarely happen in ridgewood and won’t continue to. As a teen I enjoy spending time in ridgewood with my friends because it is outdoors and the weather is becoming warmer. The police come every weekend and kick us out of the highschool, but this time they had a reason to. I can assure fights like these won’t happen again and the vandalizers will stay out of ridgewood.

  26. first off no it was not the bike gang so if u don’t know anything shut up and don’t spread false information. The reason the fight happened was bc there was someone there threatening a child with autism and one of the kids in the fight had a problem with it and spoke up about it, the other kid didn’t like being told what to do so they argued and it turned to a fight. before that everything was fine and we were all they’re having a good time. Not fair to pin this on the bikers or children from ridgewood and/or other towns.

  27. This is what happens when the “bike life” kids show up in rwood

  28. Please correct me if I’m wrong… but the fight was pre-arranged – not spontaneous. The large amount of kids present, as spectators, only confirmed that the fight spread on social media because it was pre-arranged.

I take offense that an autistic student is “blamed” for causing the fight. People are using the child with special needs to as an excuse for the other student’s bad behavior.

The education for “Disabilities Awareness Week” was about being inclusive to individuals with special needs – not being thugs to protect them.

Do these same students, that were “protecting” their autistic friend, invite him to their houses to hang out or on other activities that they do with their other friends? Or is he the kid with autism that everyone just “knows.”

The program promoted at RHS wanted to bridge the divide between “normal” students and special needs ones. They promoted inclusion, where someone’s differences were overlooked and their strengths appreciated.

The behavior on Saturday were kids being bad – and the excuse of “defending” an autistic kid is just that – an excuse.

  29. Not sure what the big deal is. Doesn’t mean they have bad parents. Doesnt mean that RHS is bad. Social media connections got 100 kids there and guess what….no fight. Police over-respnded.
I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s in a simalar type of town and there were fights all the time.

RHS never has fights. My kids have never even seen a fight in all their years.
People just like to rail Ridgewood for known and unkown reasons.

  31. I live on Beverly by the high school and I know for a fact for the past 2 months there have been high schoolers almost every weekend and sometimes weekdays gathering on Stevens and stadium field late at nights. This is sometimes until 4am. Hate to burst your bubble ridgewood, but ridgewood kids aren’t any different than any other kids. They act out too, let’s not put them on a pedestal. The cops have been called to the field the past two month on several occasions for a variety of incidences by neighbors. Sometimes they are obnoxious, but what child isn’t?

It’s not my job to call the police every time high schoolers socialize, the parents of ridgewood can do their own parenting.

High schoolers go there and do kid things like MAKE MISTAKES. This has always been true, because when I was in high school 9-5 years ago at RHS we all did the same things.
Living here since I’ve recently graduated college, I see that not much has changed. Ridgewood kids still make mistakes. They aren’t perfect, you know like everyone else in the world?

To pin blame on out of towners or “low income apartment dwellers” like this blog suggests fails to account for the fact that I have seen this behavior first hand by RHS students. Let’s be serious, a “biker gang” these are kids riding bicycles around, they are not the hells angels. Let the kids be kids.

Let’s be accountable to our community. Instead of stigmatizing those whom are not from here or are precieved as poor. We do proudly proclaim to be “stigma-free,” correct?

If the community of ridgewood doesn’t want this to happen maybe keep track of your kids? Do you know where your child is at 10pm? Can you prove they are there? This reflex to blame things on others coming into the community is misguided. This community does have issues and isn’t this cushy suburban dream fantasy where nothing bad happens, because bad things happen everywhere

How can we claim that we need to hold other accountable when we don’t do it to ourselves.

I knew this blog was incredibly dumb to begin with but I can say in full seriousness I’ve never been more disgusted to be associated with this town. It’s not because of a fight that happen or reckless kids but rather a culture of bad parenting and deflection that is deep rooted in this community.

In short go learn about your own kids problems instead of gossiping about others.

    1. You started out good , lost everyone with the political driven boogey man “we blamed the poor” , The fact is there were out of towners involved , I believe they were from Fair lawn or Clifton, but that’s not been confirmed . Out of towners implies people how don’t live in Ridgewood , yes believe it or not there are many very attractive towns in North Jersey , no one implied out of towners are “poor people” except you . Next time check the attitude and you might actually get your point across .

  32. When will people realize Ridgewood is no longer the Mecca of prestige it used to be. It’s comical oh no not my kid he’s from Ridgewood. There’s more drugs and violence that goes on in this town that anybody knows because it will get covered up to protect the families in the image of the town!

  38. There were no arrests?!? What the hell did the police do, then?

Did they show up and say “oh, it’s ok that there is a wild melee going on… everybody just go home”.

This is going to happen again if there are no negative consequences!!

Come on RPD… you can do better!!!

  39. As of a father, husband, and a resident of Ridgewood for 15 years, I have say that I am very shocked and upset what my son has told me about the incident. I also am very disappointed for the out of towners that they failed to behave themselves and know what is right. This behavior is totally unacceptable and needs to be addressed!!
