RIDGEWOOD — A long-awaited lightning detection system is up and running at two of six large sports fields in the village.

The system is designed to warn of lightning strikes within a 20- and 10-mile radius and send email and text notifications of strikes in the area.

“It’s the same system used by the county,” said Brian R. Pullman, chief of emergency services for the village. “It’s reliable. Other towns use it. It’s got a successful history.”

The system — from Weather Decision Technologies — went live hours after a presentation by Pullman and the village’s emergency management director, Brad Mason, at Wednesday’s public council meeting.

Ridgewood author’s first novel is a study in luck

With the recent national spotlight on the lottery, it is easy to view luck from a purely monetary state of mind. But as local author Lilian Duval would likely tell you, there is far more to chance and fate than a large sum of cash.Experiences with chance have not only shaped the Ridgewood resident’s outlook on life, but also determined the direction of her first novel, the recently published “You Never Know,” which follows several decades in the life of “an accidental lottery winner,” as Duval refers to her central character, Tobias.

“It’s really a study in luck,” Duval said, summarizing the philosophy behind her novel. “Even the most determined person who doesn’t believe in fate is bound to be affected by events out of his of her control.”

Two of the top executives at Passaic County’s One Stop Career Center received more than $210,000 in unauthorized overtime, according to state records.

The discovery has triggered an investigation by the county prosecutor and demands by the state for reimbursement — money that might have to come from county taxpayers, state and county officials said.

“It concerned me enough to have some real legal questions,” said Bruce James, a county freeholder who is also a board trustee for the corporation created by the county to run the center.

A new lightning detection system will be installed and rolled out at several locations in Ridgewood as part of a collaborative safety effort between the Village Council and Board of Education.

The governing body on Wednesday said the benefits of mounting and using the new system outweigh any negatives, and equipment already in the village’s possession will be installed. The project to outfit the village’s fields with safety equipment and signage will take place in several steps, with the first phase already under way.

Aronsohn taking Democratic Party money!!!

Ridgewood prides itself on its non-partisanship but it’s come to our attention that Paul Aronsohn just doesn’t get it.  He’s taken almost $4000 from Democratic sources including: Democratic Senator Dick Codey (his buddy McGreevy’s successor), loud mouthed Democratic Senator Barbara Buono, and local Democratic funder Nick Tsapatsaris.

No other candidate, thus far, has posted a dime from outside sources in this election.  Aronsohn is up to $8,000.

Tsk, tsk Mr. Aronsohn.  We don’t like it, don’t want it and won’t vote for it!

New Jersey mass transit moves more passengers

Public transportation is riding high, with nearly record-breaking ridership that reflects the shifting economy, the high price of gas, and the lifestyle of the young and creative classes. Last year, passenger traffic across the United States rose to its second-highest level since 1957, and in New Jersey, all four public and private rail transit systems are witnessing a steady increase.  (Nurin, NJ Spotlight)

Hearing on tolls reveals Lautenberg got free ride

A Port Authority executive told lawmakers at a hearing Wednesday that a $12 toll for cars headed to New York City is “fair” but pointed out something that many drivers may think is unfair: Sen. Frank Lautenberg went decades without paying a single toll.

Lautenberg, who is chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, called the hearing to examine accountability and oversight in tolling practices, including toll increases that began in 2011.  (Herman, Gannett)

Lautenberg blasts Port Authority over toll hikes

theRidgewood blog ICON theridgewoodblog.net 2Lautenberg blasts Port Authority over toll hikes

In a hearing today, U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg admonished the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and its deputy executive director over its tolling practices, saying steep rate hikes are unfair to commuters.

“When I was commissioner (of the Port Authority), the toll to cross our bridges and tunnels was two dollars. In today’s money, that would be slightly more than five dollars,” said Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) at the hearing. “But today, Port Authority tolls are out of control. It now costs $12 to cross between New Jersey and New York. When it costs $12 to drive your car across a bridge in America, something is wrong.”  (Eder, NJBIZ)

RIDGEWOOD SCHOOLS : HOHOKUS BROOK BRIDGE UPDATE

Repairs to the HoHoKus brook bridge will begin on Monday, April 23, 2012. The objective of these repairs is to permanently stabilize the bridge and allow it to remain open for pedestrian traffic and limited vehicular traffic (not to exceed 4,000 pounds).

The time line to complete all work is from April 23 through April 30.  Although repair methods have not been finalized, it is very possible a crane will be on site to lift the bridge off the supports to facilitate repairs.  During the repair time line, the bridge will be closed to all traffic.
