Groups Of Adults Turn To Cooperative Households To Save Money
March 26, 2013 11:15 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — With the cost of living on the rise and showing no sign of slowing down, total strangers desperate to save money are moving in together.

As CBS 2’s Dana Tyler reported Tuesday, older adults and even families are using this method to pool their resources. And the new communities are redefining the modern family.

Two million Americans over the age of 30 now live with a housemate or roommate, and shared households make up 18 percent of U.S. households – a 17 percent increase since 2007.

Reader says to save money, quit buying land and taking it off the tax rolls to make soccer fields

Will the Zabriskie Schedler House, in Ridgewood become the next turf field

Reader says to save money, quit buying land and taking it off the tax rolls to make soccer fields

If you want to save money, quit buying land and taking it off the tax rolls to make soccer fields. The horse farm, if its worth the $10 million we got hosed for at the time of purchase, equates to about $250,000 per year of taxes no longer coming in.

Citizens park was paid for with donations from long time residents, whose names appear on the placque. It was for a PARK, not a soccer field, with obnoxious loud people blocking up the traffic there, along with the nite lights. Its disgusting how a nice green park became a brown mudfield to accommodate the newbies here.

Ridgewood Public Schools seemed to have prepared him very well for a rigorous university curriculum

I was not a lover of Ridgewood Public Schools until my son (who was just about the 50 percentile at RHS Class of ’12) took the SATs and ACTs and scored extremely well; well enough to get him into some of very competitive engineering schools and liberal arts colleges. Ridgewood is still looked upon very favorably by most universities. His 3.6 RHS GPA went alot further than I thought it would have. Some might say that Ridgewood is relying on its’ old reputation but I do not. I am happy to say that he excelling at his freshman courses (calc 2, physics, writing, etc) at a very good engineering college. Ridgewood Public Schools seemed to have prepared him very well for a rigorous university curriculum.

Just my two cents worth.

Electronic Health Records: Doctors Want to Keep Patients Out

Electronic Health Records: Doctors Want to Keep Patients Out

The emergence of electronic medical records has left many patients wanting access to their own health information. But a new Accenture survey shows that many doctors don’t think it’s a good idea for patients to see their records.

TUESDAY, March 26, 2013 — According to a new Harris Poll survey, conducted on behalf of the management consulting firm Accenture, less than one-third of U.S. doctors think patients should have full access to their own electronic health records.

As a patient, you may literally trust your doctor with your life, and the doctor-patient relationship relies on this level of trust. The  relationship should be one of give and take, even if the exchange is sometimes dominated by the professional.

So it may come as a surprise that 65 percent of docs believe their patients should have only limited access to their electronic health records, and 4 percent believe patients should have no access at all.

Sebelius: Yep, ObamaCare is raising insurance costs

Sebelius: Yep, ObamaCare is raising insurance costs
By: John Hayward
3/27/2013 07:46 AM

A watershed moment in the ongoing disaster of ObamaCare, as Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius finally admits that health insurance premiums are rising because of the President’s health insurance takeover, per the Wall Street Journal:

Ms. Sebelius’s remarks come weeks before insurers are expected to begin releasing rates for plans that start on Jan. 1, 2014, when key provisions of the health law kick in. Premiums have been a sensitive subject for the Obama administration, which is counting on elements in the health law designed to increase competition among insurers to keep rates in check. The administration has pointed to subsidies that will be available for many lower-income Americans to help them with the cost of coverage.

The secretary’s remarks are among the first direct statements from federal officials that people who have skimpy health plans right now could face higher premiums for plans that are more generous. She noted that the law requires plans to provide better benefits and treat all customers equally regardless of their medical claims.

“These folks will be moving into a really fully insured product for the first time, and so there may be a higher cost associated with getting into that market,” she said. “But we feel pretty strongly that with subsidies available to a lot of that population that they are really going to see much better benefit for the money that they’re spending.”

Ms. Sebelius added that those customers currently pay more for their health care if their plans have high out-of-pocket costs, high deductibles or exclude particular types of coverage, such as mental health treatment. She also said that some men and younger customers could see their rates increase while women and older customers could see their rates drop because the law restricts insurers’ ability to set rates based on age and gender.

N.J. gets poor marks in emergency preparedness

New Jersey flunks in the category of emergency preparedness and response, according to a recent report. Yet experiences make us feel we’ve coped pretty darn well with the things nature throws at us. After all, lately we’ve dealt with severe flu outbreaks, whooping cough, West Nile Virus, blizzards, hurricanes, and Superstorm Sandy. Quigley, Jersey Journal

Shatner ‘appalled’ by IRS ‘Trek’ spoof
By Mario Trujillo – 03/26/13 10:56 AM ET

William Shatner said he is “appalled” by the Internal Revenue Services’s spoof of “Star Trek” — the television show that made him famous for his portrayal of Captain James Kirk.

Last week, the IRS apologized for spending $60,000 on the parody, which was intended to be used as a training video. Lawmakers — and now the show’s star actor — have blasted it as a senseless use of taxpayer money.

“So I watched that IRS video. I am appalled at the utter waste of U.S. tax dollars,” Shatner tweeted Tuesday Morning.

The six-minute “Star Trek” video made in Maryland was shown to agency employees at a conference in 2010. In the video, IRS workers are meticulously dressed as characters from the popular TV show and are flying a staged space craft towards the planet “Notax.”

Shatner, who is known for his distinct style of overacting, didn’t weigh in on the performance seen in the video.

The IRS has called the video a “mistake” and promised to clamp down on similar productions in the future.

Ridgewod Council reviews school district’s budget

The Ridgewood News

After a presentation on next year’s preliminary $91 million school district general fund budget, Village Council members voiced approval of the district’s efforts to provide quality education in difficult economic times.

The presentation, which is available on the district website, brought municipal officials, who manage less than a third of village taxes, together with school board members and district administrators, who manage about two-thirds of each tax dollar. A public hearing on the district budget is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28.

The school tax increase next year will likely amount to about $200 for the average assessed home, if voters approve the budget on Tuesday, April 16.

The preliminary municipal budget presented last week by Village Manager Ken Gabbert, who was present last Monday, included a 1.5 percent, or roughly $225 tax hike. The council, however, is ultimately hoping for a zero percent tax increase.
