Moments leading to fatal FBI shooting in Orlando still unclear
Posted: May 23, 2013 7:34 AM EDT Updated: May 23, 2013 9:52 AM EDT

An FBI incident review team from Washington, D.C., is in Orlando today, a day after a Russian man who knew Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot dead by an agent.

Federal and Central Florida law enforcement agencies are still collecting and processing evidence from the shooting scene at a condominium complex on Peregrine Avenue, near Kirkman Road and Universal Orlando, where Ibragim Todashev was shot early Wednesday.

Initially, FBI officials said Todashev, 27, became violent and lunged at an agent with a knife while he was being questioned about Tsarnaev and an unsolved 2011 triple murder in the Boston suburb of Waltham. The agent, acting on an “imminent threat,” then shot Todashev, they said.

However, later in the day, some of those officials had backed off that preliminary account, and it’s no longer clear what happened in the moments before the fatal shooting, The Associated Press reported.

Readers Support Graydon Pool

Believe it or not, every house in town does not have central air conditioning, not to mention a private pool. Graydon has always been a delightful, convenient hot-weather respite at reasonable fees for those in town who do not own second or third homes and can’t spend half the summer at resorts–as well as those who do have vacation homes but would like a cool dip when they can’t go there. It looks great, too–a refreshing oasis in the center of town.

Many Village residents enjoy and demand amenities, such as increasingly expensive sports fields and turf remediation, that are of no interest to others, but who nevertheless pay for them through property taxes. Fairness is an issue. Nevertheless, if the Village marketed Graydon in any way beyond Parks & Rec fliers, more people would join. There isn’t even an obvious place on the Village website to learn details about the place and join.

Mr. Rogers’s opinion that as long as Councilman Riche does not participate in any vote, there is no issue or problem with his company having the contract

Mr. Rogers’s opinion that as long as Councilman Riche does not participate in any vote, there is no issue or problem with his company having the contract

Taken verbatim from the official meeting minutes of VOR Council on 6/13/2012:

THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION, NUMBERED 12-163, WAS CONSIDERED SEPARATELY AND READ IN FULL:

Prior to the vote on Resolution #12-163, Mayor Killion asked Mr. Rogers to explain it to the public. Mr. Rogers said that Councilman Riche brought this to his attention before it became an agenda item. The State contract for the materials and supplies to be purchased is owned by EXTEL Communications, which is Councilman Riche’s company. Therefore, the question is whether this will be an issue for Councilman Riche to participate in these discussions, and if there is an issue with his company being awarded the contract. Mr. Rogers pointed out that this often happens in the State, and as long as Councilman Riche does not participate in any vote on this matter, the State finds no ethical problem or concern with the fact that Councilman Riche’s company has the State contract. Mr. Rogers also checked with the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), as well as the Local Government Ethics Law, and they both concur with Mr. Roger’s opinion in this matter. Therefore, it is Mr. Rogers’s opinion that as long as Councilman Riche does not participate in any vote, there is no issue or problem with his company having the contract, or with the Village awarding this contract to his company.
Councilman Aronsohn said it is his understanding that not only is there no issue regarding Councilman Riche’s company, but that the equipment is badly needed in the Village. Mr. Rogers agreed. Dr. Gabbert also noted that the Village has been in a bit of a bind for the last couple of years because the Village could not utilize the State contract that every other municipality has been able to use, which has forced the Village to solicit other vendors, including some from out of state.

FOR THE RECORD, MR. ARONSOHN VOTED YES TO THE ABOVE RESOLUTION.

Reader says , Mayor Aronsohn , yet another ill conceived attack that’s blown up in your face

Well Paul, yet another ill conceived attack that’s blown up in your face. Even your buddy at Paul’s Patch couldn’t write a story with a slant in your favor.

He tried, but he got caught big time by several of his readers. I guess this just hasn’t been a good week for you, with Andy Maguire back in town and getting ready to run for the congressional seat you so badly want. When it rains, it pours.

Even an umbrella and boots won’t help you now.

Aronsohn, Hauck and Pucciarelli attack on Councilmen Richie Backfires

Aronsohn, Hauck and Pucciarelli attack on Councilmen Richie Backfires

Reader sayas , To take a quote from the movie Tropic Thunder , “Here we go again, again”

Aronsohn, Hauck and Pucciarelli just can’t help themselves. Once again, gang land tactics with Aronosohn, Pucc and Hauck tag teaming Riche and once again the intended target stayed calm.

Watching in disbelief all I could think was that these three are not nice people. Hauck outright accuses Riche of wrong doing and then when members of the public stand up in protest she blubbers some ridiculous statement to the contrary.

It don’t work that way Hauck. Pucciarelli makes some crazy statement about being in a bunker and out of contact for days. I’m sorry then why didn’t he call Riche and ask him about it and find out the particulars. No instead like the arrogant asshole he is, he castigates him in public.

And Aronsohn, I’d like to know how we can impeach this moron. Ridgewood has sunk to a new low and it’s sad. Thank you Councilman Riche for your service. Thank you for keeping the Village safe. Thank you for behaving like a civilized human being.

The Ridgewood News

Ridgewood Councilman Tom Riche abruptly pulled his private telecommunications company from any future dealings with the village after he was pressed by his governing colleagues Wednesday night over an $8,000 payment discrepancy.

An anonymous letter sent last week to Mayor Paul Aronsohn alleged that Riche’s firm, North Haledon-based Extel Communications, was paid more than an approved amount by the Village of Ridgewood for services last year. The previous Village Council awarded a contract via resolution to Extel under state contract on June 13, 2012, for communications maintenance, repairs and upgrades in an amount not to exceed $24,000.

The contract was projected to include phone and software upgrades to the Toshiba systems at Village Hall, the water department and fire department headquarters. Extel is the only dealer listed on the approved state contract vendor list for Toshiba systems.

The disclosure of the attorney general’s role came as President Barack Obama, in a major speech on his counterterrorism policy, said Holder had agreed to review Justice Department guidelines governing investigations that involve journalists.

A detective from the state Division of Criminal Justice carries boxes of evidence out from TGI Friday on Route 3 West in Clifton.

That’s what state investigators were trying to find out Wednesday as they raided 29 bars and restaurants, including two in Bergen County and one in Passaic County, suspected of serving cheaper liquor as high-priced, name-brand spirits.

More than 100 investigators from the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control simultaneously entered the establishments — nearly half of them TGI Fridays — around the state at 11 a.m. Among them were The Brick House in Wyckoff, Railroad Café in Rutherford and TGI Fridays in Clifton, the Attorney General’s Office said.

The raids were the result of a yearlong probe dubbed “Operation Swill.”

Affordable Care Act about coverage not cost containment

TRENTON – The Affordable Care Act that will go into full effect in 2014 might as well be a misnomer.

That’s according to one expert – Joel White, president of the Council for Affordable Health Care Coverage in Washington, D.C. – who said Wednesday that the federal health insurance law is “more about coverage than cost containment

RIDGEWOOD — A homeowner living near The Valley Hospital isn’t buying an expert’s statement that her 100-year-old house is done settling and won’t be affected by proposed construction that would more than double the size of the hospital.

The project would require nearly 11,250 trucks to cart out about 170,000 cubic yards of soil and rock while up to 300,000 gallons of water would be pumped out of the area daily, said Moustafa Gouda, director of Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering Services at Maser Consulting in Red Bank, at the Planning Board meeting Monday night.

Gouda, who was hired by the hospital, said Valley will “control the blasting and dewatering and there’ll be no adverse effects to the homes.”

Study: Women 40 Percent More Likely To Develop Mental Illness Than Men
May 23, 2013 9:40 AM

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – There is a gender gap for mental illness, with females being up to 40 percent more likely to develop some type of mental health condition than their male counterparts.

A new study to be published by Oxford University Press finds that women are nearly 75 percent more likely than men to have suffered from depression, and approximately 60 percent more likely to report an anxiety disorder.

The U.K. study was led by Dr. Daniel Freeman, who said his latest research set to appear in the book, “The Stressed Sex: Uncovering the Truth about Men, Women and Mental Health,” sets out to answer a simple but crucial question: are rates of psychological disorder different between men and women?

Updated Emergency Planning Guide for Village Residents

Updated Emergency Planning Guide for Village Residents

The Ridgewood Office of Emergency Management (OEM) just published an Emergency Planning Guide for 2013 – the first update of this critical resource in nearly 15 years.

The Emergency Planning Guide is designed to provide residents with basic emergency preparedness information, including tools and checklists that will assist families in preparing for different types of emergencies. It will also help residents to stay informed before, during and after disasters.

Click Here for your copy of the Emergency Planning Guide: https://mods.ridgewoodnj.net/pdf/manager/2013OEMGuide.pdf

“The Emergency Planning Guide is a must-have resource for all Ridgewood residents and businesses,” explained Mayor Paul Aronsohn. “As we have learned from Super Storm Sandy and other recent storms, you can never be too prepared for a disaster.”

“I applaud our OEM leadership for its proactive approach,” Aronsohn continued.

For the first time, the Emergency Planning Guide is available electronically for viewing and downloading on the Ridgewood OEM website (https://oem.ridgewoodnj.net) as well as the main Village of Ridgewood website (www.ridgewoodnj.net).

The new Emergency Planning Guide was specifically designed as a PDF document to take advantage of current technology. A limited number of hard copies will also be printed at a later date.

According to OEM Coordinator Jeremy Kleiman, “In the past, we would print and mail a copy of the booklet to all village residents and businesses, which is expensive. Budget constraints made us re-think how we communicate emergency preparedness information to the public. We decided to make the Emergency Planning Guide an electronic document to save costs and also to leverage current technology. Residents who are registered to receive E-Notices from the village will receive the document by email.”

OEM asks all residents to register for E-Notices to receive routine information, such as the Emergency Planning Guide, as well as emergency alerts. Please register by visiting either www.ridgewoodnj.net and clicking on the “E-Notices” link, or https://oem.ridgewoodnj.net and clicking on the “Swift911 Notification” icon. Either link will take residents to the same registration portal.

For those residents who do not register for E-Notices or are unable to receive information by email, a limited number of hard copies of the Emergency Planning Guide will be printed at a later date. Ridgewood Councilman Tom Riche is leading a fundraising effort to secure donations that will cover the cost of printing the booklets. Contributions may be made payable to Ridgewood Emergency Planning Guide, c/o Finance Office, Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 N. Maple Ave., Ridgewood, NJ 07451
