Washington DC, President Donald Trump has paused 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada for at least 30 days after securing last-minute border security agreements with both countries. The tariffs, originally set to take effect today, could have triggered a North American trade war, leading to higher consumer prices in the U.S.
Border Security Agreements with Mexico & Canada
As part of the deal:
- Mexico and Canada will deploy 10,000 troops each to their respective borders with the U.S. to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will move forward with a $1.3 billion border plan, appoint a “fentanyl czar,” and launch a joint strike force targeting organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.
Negotiations between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada are expected to continue over the next month.
10% Tariffs on Chinese Imports Take Effect
While tariffs on Mexico and Canada are on hold, a 10% tariff on Chinese imports will go into effect today.
Together, Mexico, Canada, and China accounted for 42% of total U.S. imports last year—over $1 trillion in goods.
What’s Next?
With North American tariffs temporarily paused, businesses and consumers avoid immediate price increases. However, continued negotiations will determine whether the tariffs take effect next month or if a long-term trade agreement can be reached.
