PARAMUS, NJ — Following a severe storm system that swept through Bergen County on Sunday afternoon, July 5, 2026, Paramus officials are grappling with widespread utility outages and property damage. Among the most notable incidents, a massive Borough-owned shade tree collapsed directly into a single-family home located in the 300 block of Dunkerhook Road.

First responders, including the Paramus Police Department and Paramus Fire Department, rushed to the scene. Miraculously, local authorities have confirmed that no injuries were reported in the Dunkerhook Road incident, though a municipal building inspector was requested to evaluate the structural integrity of the home.

Mayor Chris DiPiazza Issues Emergency Update

As municipal crews and utility teams work to clear debris, Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza released a comprehensive emergency update detailing the borough’s active response and safety protocols.

1. Drone Assessments & Neighborhood Access

To gauge the full scope of the destruction efficiently, the Borough has deployed drones to document downed trees and blockages across town. Operators are maintaining strict safety distances from tangled utility lines.

Restoring access to blocked residential streets remains the town’s highest priority. In a bid to accelerate recovery efforts, the Borough has successfully secured permissions to utilize private access roads to reach isolated neighborhoods faster.

2. Critical Safety Protocols for Residents

With power lines down throughout the area, town officials are emphasizing several urgent safety rules:

  • Live Wire Hazards: Treat all downed wires as live and dangerous. Do not touch or approach them. PSEG crews are currently active in the Borough mitigating these hazards.

  • Generator Safety: Residents utilizing portable generators are strictly reminded to run them outdoors only. Never operate a generator in a basement, garage, or any enclosed space due to the risk of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Reporting Emergencies: Do not use social media to report storm damage or outages. All active hazards, downed wires, and emergencies must be reported directly to the Paramus Police Department via phone.

3. Vulnerable Residents Prioritized

The Borough’s emergency response is being systematically prioritized to protect the community’s most vulnerable. High-priority cases include clearing live wire hazards, checking on elderly residents, and assisting those dependent on medical devices.

Urgent Notice: If you or a loved one relies on an oxygen supply with less than 24 hours of reserve remaining, or if you are an elderly resident severely impacted by the blackout, please contact local emergency services immediately to arrange safe transportation to an equipped facility.

When Will Power Be Restored?

Due to the sheer volume of structural damage and tangled overhead lines, total grid restoration is going to be a prolonged process. PSEG and municipal crews expect that power may not be fully restored to all affected Paramus neighborhoods until midweek.

Borough officials expressed gratitude for residents’ continued patience and cooperation as emergency personnel work around the clock to bring the community back online.
