Ridgewood NJ, Time may pass, but the legacy of true heroism never fades. The Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 recently gathered with community members to honor the memory of Firefighter Mark D. Cassidy, marking the 20th anniversary of his poignant passing.
Two decades later, Firefighter Cassidy remains deeply rooted in the hearts of those who served alongside him, the community he protected, and the family he loved so dearly.
From Volunteer to Career Firefighter: A Life Dedicated to Service
Mark Cassidy’s journey with the Ridgewood Fire Department began in 1989 when he first joined the ranks as a dedicated volunteer. His passion for public safety and unwavering work ethic quickly became apparent, leading to his official appointment as a career fireman in 1996.
He remained a proud, active member of the department until his tragic passing on May 30, 2006. In the years following his death, Firefighter Cassidy’s passing was officially recognized as a 9/11 Line of Duty Death. Like many brave first responders, Cassidy spent exhaustive hours working at Ground Zero in the direct aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks, sacrificing his long-term health to assist in the recovery efforts.
‘A Firefighter by Nature’
Beyond the firehouse doors, Mark was a devoted father who was immensely proud of his five children: Jessica, Mark, Kristin, Leanne, and Karen.
His daughter, Kristin, shared a fond memory that perfectly encapsulates his character. During a trip to her college campus in New York City a few years after 9/11, Mark spent most of the day meticulously pointing out potential fire hazards, discussing emergency preparedness, and ensuring she knew exactly how to stay safe. It was clear to everyone who knew him that Mark was not just a firefighter by trade, but by his very nature.
Carrying the Memory of the Fallen
Like so many first responders who answered the call at the World Trade Center, Mark carried the heavy emotional weight of what he witnessed at Ground Zero. He frequently spoke of the brave firefighters who never made it home that day, keeping their memory alive long after the smoke finally cleared from the Manhattan skyline. Today, the Ridgewood community carries that same torch for him.
Posthumously a grandfather, Mark’s dedication to duty, family, and country continues to inspire the next generation of first responders in Bergen County. FMBA Local 47 invites all residents to join them in keeping the Cassidy family in their thoughts and prayers.
